Petition: Officers' Response

Petition: Officers’ Response Title: International Peace Symbols on UN Peace Day, Sept. 21, at City Council properties and parks Primary Petitioner: Richard Tingey Total Signatures: 11 (via ePetition) Presented by: Richard Tingey Contact officer: Paul Andrews Director responsible: Derek Fry Officers’ recommendation: Officers recommend that the Committee: 1. Receive the petition. Background: The ePetition “International Peace Symbols on UN Peace Day, Sept. 21, at City Council properties and parks” was initiated by Richard Tingey on 19 October 2012 and closed on 3 May 2013. The purpose of the petition is to request that the Council place symbols on small driven-in posts at parks for that day only. It's the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament's for all to use. www.cnduk.org they’d be 600mm in diameter and painted white. At the City Council Office Building foyer, the Absolutely Positively Wellington logo would be displayed on a stand with 100mm high letters and an International Peace Symbol, that height, either side of the word "Positively", for this day only. The petition was open to all members of the public with internet access to the Council’s website. It received 11 signatures. Officers’ response: We have had a number of requests to celebrate or acknowledge Peace Day this & previous years. The issue is how these initiatives might complement activities we already have, such as at the Botanic Gardens. The Peace Garden in the Botanic Garden is an enduring year round commitment by the City to Peace - complete with 17 different commemorations/memorials. We also host World Peace Day and Hiroshima Day commemorative events at the garden. Furthermore our ability to resource these initiatives with staff time or money is limited. Last year following a similar request, we did agree to pay for the painting of a peace symbol outside the library & at Civic Square. Options for funding any initiatives that Councillors feel they would like to support could include discretionary funding from the Mayoral Fund. .
