NFS Form 10900-a 0MB Approval No. 1024-0018 (8-86) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet The Minnesota State Sanatorium for Consumptives Section number 7 Page 1 Cass County, Minnesota Description The Minnesota State Sanatorium for Consumptives, commonly known as Ah-Gwah-Ching, is located in north central Minnesota off State Highways 200 and 371, three miles south of Walker, in Cass County. The 176 acre site is located on a high bluff overlooking Shingobee Bay on the south shore of Leech Lake. The facility is situated on a picturesque tract of land with a park-like setting amid stands of white and Norway pine, oak, birch, and maple trees, and acres of lawn. The State Sanatorium opened in 1907 as the first state operated facility for the treatment of tuberculosis. 1 It continued to grow and expand through the 1930s until it had developed into an extensive complex resembling a self-contained community.
