The 176 acre site is located on a high bluff overlooking Shingobee Bay on the south shore of Leech Lake. The facility is situated on a picturesque tract of land with a park-like setting amid stands of white and Norway pine, oak, birch, and maple trees, and acres of lawn. The State Sanatorium opened in 1907 as the first state operated facility for the treatment of tuberculosis. 1 It continued to grow and expand through the 1930s until it had developed into an extensive complex resembling a self-contained community.
