DONOR REPORT AFGHANISTAN EMERGENCY Summer 2014 UPDATED: AuGUST 2014 ISLAMIC RELIEF USA AFGHANISTAN EMERGENCY: SUMMARY Heavy rains in Afghanistan have caused flash flooding in the region, and heavy rains in Badakhshan, a remote part of northeastern Afghanistan, triggered a landside. Islamic Relief is currently responding to the effects of the flooding in Afghanistan by providing food aid to those affected in the highest priority provinces. Islamic Relief is monitoring the situation very closely for more developments and ways to help the emergency response in other areas. The number of people affected by floods in Afghanistan rose to more than 120,000 people in 16 provinces (85 districts). AFGHANISTAN EMERGENCY PROJECTS SuppORTED BY DONORS LIKE YOU EMERGENCY RESPONSE FOR FLOOD VICTIMS JUNE 2014 - SEPT. 2014 Location: Balkh, Samangan, and Jawazjan provinces This project aims to provide emergency food and supplies to flood affected families in Afghanistan. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: • 7,542 households (45,252 individuals) will be provided emergency food packets in Balkh, Samangan and Jawazjan • Non-food item kits will be provided including: tents, kitchen kits, carpets, sleeping mats, blankets and hygiene kitsw THIS PROJECT WILL HELP MORE THAN 45,200 INDIVIDUALS. EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE FOR FLOOD VICTIMS MAY 2014 - AUG. 2014 Location: Jawazjan province This project aims to provide emergency food packs to flood affected families in Afghanistan. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: • Provide emergency food packets to 2,000 families including: Wheat, beans, oil, salt, sugar and rice TRANSITIONAL SHELTER FOR LANDSLIDE AFFECTED FAMILIES JUNE 2014 - Nov. 2015 Location: Badakshan region This project aims to provide emergency transitional shelter and resources to families affected by the landslide in Badakshan. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: • Provide transitional shelter to 50 families • Construct a deep water well for a sustainable, drinking water source • Construct a community hall for training, education, community mobilization and more THIS PROJECT WILL HELP AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY IN BADAKSHAN. IRUSA.ORG ISLAMIC RELIEF USA HAS COMMITTED $1 MILLION TO THE RECOVERY EFFORT. 2 IRUSA CURRENT PROJECTS IN AFGHANISTAN IRUSA.ORG 3 WATER SuPPLY FOR FAMILIES LIVING IN CAVES FEB. 2014 - JAN. 2015 Location: Bamyan province, Afghanistan This project aims to improve the living conditions of families living in caves in Bamyan by providing clean water and promoting proper hygiene. ProJECT obJECTivES: • Construct a deep water well • Construct a stone water tank for water storage • Intall 4,000 m of water pipeline • Improve job opportunities for community members THis ProJECT WILL HELP AN ESTimATED 1,900 PEOPLE. HOME-BASED EDUCATION FOR WOMEN, PHASE 3 Nov. 2013 - OCT. 2015 Location: Bamyan province, Afghanistan This project aims to help women in need complete a 10-month education program. The program will teach reading, writing and math, improve health and hygiene awareness, help improve employable skills, provide business training small-business support. This is phase three of a project that has been helping women since 2010. ProJECT obJECTivES: • Assist 1,800 women complete a 10-month education program approved by the Ministry of Education • Ensure unprivileged women gain literacy skills and math skills • Improve hygiene and nutrition practices among women in need through health education • Empower women with training in employable skills in specific trades and small-business ventures ACHIEVEMENTS: • 900 illiterate women have been registered for the program from remote areas of Waras district • 36 training centers have been established in different villages of Waras district • 18 literacy teachers have been recruited and trained • 16 health and business teachers have been recruited and trained • 900 women have been provided school materials and supplies • 900 women have received 4 months of literacy training, and health and home-based business training THis ProJECT WILL HELP 1,800 WomEN AND THEir FAmiLIES. IRUSA.ORG 4 QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ORPHANS, PHASE 2 MAY 2013 - AUG. 2014 Location: Jalalabad City, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan This project is continuing the work of improving the facilities at Khoog Khoor orphanage and school for orphans. This is phase two of a project that has been helping orphans since 2011. ProJECT obJECTivES: • Provide quality primary and secondary education to 260 orphans • To increase literary rates in orphans • To improve the health of 260 orphans through the provision of nutritious food, and recreational activities • Train orphanage school teachers and school staff in better education practices and lesson plans ACHIEVEMENTS: • Project has provided an improved educational environment to 200 girls and 300 boys who are orphans • 50 orphans received new furnishings and equipped dorminories • Quality food is being provided to orphans and is reguarly checked for quality assurance • Classrooms have been equipped including: White board, chairs, fan, carpeting, and more • A dormitory building is under construction with a new library • 10 teachers and two school staff members have received training THis ProJECT HAS HELPED 550 PEOPLE AND WILL HELP AT LEAST 3,900 PEOPLE. RAMADAN FOOD DISTRIBUTION Location: Various locations in Afghanistan This project aims to provide staple food packages to needy families during Ramadan. Food package includes staple food items specific to the local diet. Items are source locally to help boost the local economy. Afghanistan food packages will include: Wheat flour, sugar, cooking oil, rice, beans, dates COST PER FOOD PACKAGE: $80 ONE-TO-ONE ORPHAN SPONSORSHIP Location: Various locations in Afghanistan This project aims to connect caring donors to orphans in need. Donors help provide the financial support necessary to help meet the child's basic needs including: food, clothing, medical care, shelter, school supplies, and education.
