MEDIABASE 2YEAR-END0 EDITION11 www.interscoperadio.com MERGERS DOMINATE 2011 CHART SHARE Consolidation of Labels Shift Paradigm as RCA Takes #1 Position For the past 12 years, Mediabase has calculated its annual Label Performance Review based on a running total of spins during a 12-month period that runs from late November through late November of the following year. In the case of the 2011 chart year, the date range was from 11/21/10 thru 11/19/11. Almost from the beginning of the annual Mediabase Label Performance process, there have been label mergers, that have resulted in particular record companies getting increased chart share during the course of a chart year. It’s well known that the recorded music industry has undergone widespread change in the last 10 years and 2011 was no different. This year saw the mergers of Universal Motown into Universal Republic, Jive Label Group into RCA Records, as well as the merger of promotion staffs at Warner Bros. and Reprise. These were among the biggest mergers the industry has seen yet. While the final mergers were completed in the second half of 2011, many of these labels went the entire year with certain formats already having been merged long before that. The chart share is designed to illustrate the rank and percentage that each company earns both overall and in individual formats. Therefore, in an effort to better explain this year’s results, we present the following timeline on the 2011 Mediabase Chart Year: June 2011 Universal Motown merged into Universal Republic August 2011 Jive Label Group merged into RCA Records September 2011 Reprise merged into Warner Bros. With that said, the newly-merged RCA Records took the overall top spot with a market share of 19.4%. The new entity combined artists from the Jive roster including Britney Spears, Usher, Three Days Grace, R. Kelly, Chris Brown, Miguel, Cage The Elephant and Pink, with majors from the RCA camp including Kelly Clarkson, Foo Fighters, Daughtry, Ke$ha, Marsha Ambrosius, and of course Pitbull. RCA owned the top position at Top 40 and Urban AC (by a 3-1 margin over their next closest competitor), while coming in second at Rhythmic, Urban, Hot AC, Active Rock, and Alternative. In the #2 spot overall was Universal Republic at 13.1%. The huge year from Cash Money was one of the big aspects of Universal Republic’s success with Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, and DJ Khaled all having a stellar year. Kelly Rowland, Nelly, and Enrique Iglesias made major comebacks, while Republic had breakthrough acts including Florence + The Machine, Volbeat, and Naked And Famous. Taylor Swift also participated with multiple hits this year, and Republic was key in the success of The Band Perry at Top 40, AC, and Hot AC. Republic was a strong #1 at Rhythmic, and narrowly edged out RCA for the top spot at Urban. They were also runner-up at Triple A and Urban AC. Another strong year for Interscope at 12.8%. Interscope gained market share as the year progressed and finished a very solid third. Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga delivered multiple hits, as did Rise Against, OneRepublic, and Maroon 5. Then there was the breakthrough year for LMFAO and Far East Movement. Interscope was #2 at Top 40, #1 at Hot AC, and #4 at Urban, Rhythmic, and Alternative. Island Def Jam was #4 for the year at 11.3%. Huge hits from Rihanna, Jeremih (who had the #1 song at Rhythmic), Kanye West (solo and with Jay-Z), Rick Ross, and breakthrough hits from Big Sean, Neon Trees, and My Darkest Days. Island Def Jam scored #3 rankings at Top 40, Rhythmic, and Urban. This landed four labels with double-digit shares this year. Capitol came in fifth this year with a strong 8.7%. Leading the way was superstar Katy Perry with a plethora of #1 hits across multiple formats. Perry’s record-breaking year included five consecutive #1 hits at Top 40 during the course of the chart year. David Guetta became a major player in 2011, alongside another huge year for Capitol’s diversified rock roster including Coldplay, Decemberists, Alter Bridge, Saving Abel, and Sick Puppies to name just a few. Not to be left out of course was another multi-format hit from Capitol Nashville’s Lady Antebellum. Atlantic came in a close sixth behind Capitol. Bruno Mars, Trey Songz, Cobra Starship, Shinedown, Skillet, Death Cab For Cutie, Switchfoot, and Lupe Fiasco all contributed to Atlantic’s broad-based roster. The merged Warner Bros. entity finished at #7. Warner Bros. scored wins at Active Rock and Alternative for the year, thanks to Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Black Keys, and My Chemical Romance. The Warner Bros. Group also made some real noise at Top 40, Rhythmic, and Urban/ Urban AC with the likes of Jason Derulo, Waka Flocka Flame, Wale, Eric Benet, and multiple hits from the New Boyz. Columbia finished just a tenth of a point behind Warner Bros. at #8 with 5.4%. However, what should be noted is a stellar second half of the year, where Columbia nearly doubled their market share from April through November. It goes without saying that Adele was a major contributor, with major hits at multiple formats. Columbia also broke through big this year with the likes of Foster The People and J. Cole, while Beyonce came back and delivered several songs that had significant chart action, including the #1 hit “Party” at Urban. Roadrunner slotted in the #9 spot this year. While Roadrunner‘s always huge rock department delivered with Stone Sour, Korn, and Theory of A Deadman, we saw new artist development from Young The Giant at Alternative, as well as multi-format hits from Christina Perri and Wiz Khalifa, and a #1 Top 40 hit from Gym Class Heroes. In 10th place was Epic. They were led by The Script, Chevelle, and got some strong momentum at year’s end with the release of a new project by the Fray.
