An immediat e success, Intermedia fulfilled a need in the Vancouver artistic community for a central meeting place for all different types of creative minds . The interes t in group activities, group creativity and community-related projects arose ou t of the changing lifestyles and values of the young people of the sixties . Inter- media described its initial aims in this way : At the time of its inception Intermedia aimed to create a centre of community resource in Vancouver where artists , architects, engineers, technologists and educators coul d come together to explore new models and formats for the purpose of intensifying and expanding the effectiveness o f creative sensibility in the community . Later the aims of the society were shifted to emphasize individual artists an d smaller groups : The purpose/aim of Intermedia is to help the artis t realize himself and his work by providing an umbrella / shelter of cooperatively-structured, contiguous an d inter-related functioning artists' groups, often ser - vice-oriented . Intermedia provided support both financially and morally for all of the artist s and groups connected to it . With the help of Canada Council and federal govern - ment grants, Intermedia put on exhibitions, workshops, educational seminars an d impromptu social and artistic gatherings . As Intermedia grew and the spin-offs from Intermedia became independent, th e core group, Intermedia Society, began to lose importance as a source of inspiratio n and support (see attached sheet showing spin-offs and dates of important Inter - media activities) . By 1974 Intermedia Press had eclipsed the founding group , Intermedia Society . Intermedia Society had created and initiated an exciting new art scene in Vancouver and left in its wake many groups that were central t o the continuation of modern art and writing on the West Coast . Intermedia was involved in audio-visual programs, photography, dance , environmental research, exhibition projects, educational programs (in school s and community centres), film and video workshops and shows, media and desig n consulting, poetry readings, a mime troupe, etc . etc . There were many well - known artists, writers and musicians connected to Intermedia . Some of thes e people were Bill Bissett, Henry Rappaport, Jack Shadbolt, Doris Shadbolt, Werne r Aellen, Gregg Simpson, Gary Lee Nova, Gerry Gilbert, Michael Morris and man y more (see attached list showing the various core groups that made up Intermedia) . The files originally created by Intermedia have been kept in order and note d in the inventory . All other files and series have been created to complemen t the original filing system . Because of this there are files that have either duplicate or additional information to the information provided in the origina l filing system (see Selective Cross Reference List) . Drsring the history of The Intermedia Society certain artist s have been associated with the conception of Intermedia in on e way or another, .at one time and .another, and in many ways still .
