So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon 3 a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and 4 precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, 5 THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of 6 the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mys- 7 tery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose 8 names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, 9 on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; 10 and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and 11 goeth into perdition. And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no king- 12 dom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is 14 Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are 15 peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, 16 and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their king- 17 dom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. 2 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings 18 of the earth. Paul exhorts today’s believer to “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry...Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart” 2 Timothy 2:22. “...that great city...great Babylon” Revelation 14:8, 16:19 is “...the great whore that sitteth up- on many waters...peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues...that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth” Revelation 17:1, 15, 18. She and her followers, worldwide and at all levels, “Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them” Romans 1:32, 3 do precisely the opposite of Paul’s exhortation, “For their rock is not as our Rock, even our en- emies themselves being judges. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days...Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you” James 5:1, 3, 5- 6. John testifies that “...when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration” Revelation 17:6 because Rome is adept at coming across as benign like the enemies of Israel who got the right rebuke though its effectiveness was for a time limited.
