The items listed are centered around the philosophy of resource-based learning in which the curriculum is supported by a variety of print, audiovisual and human resources. In addition to books, the bibliography lists films, videos, computer software and audiovisual kits. Several of the films listed are available for loan from Media House Productions. As well, Media House Productions provides a low cost duplication service for many of the videos listed in this bibliography. To assist schools in accessing human resources, lists of organizations have also been included. When using this bibliography as a selection aid, the following suggestions may be helpful: Background Review The resources in this bibliography are recommended as appropriate materials to support the Arts Education Curriculum. However, it remains the responsibility of individual schools to preview and select materials that best meet the neelk of that particular school and the community. Several publications available from Saskatchewan Education provide further assistance in the selection process. These include: Learning Resource Centres in Saskatchewan: A Guide for Development, 1988- provides guidance for developing a selection policy and suggests criteria for selection. Diverse Voices: Selecting Equitable Resources for Indian and Métis Education, 1992- suggests strategies for recognizing and dealing with bias in resources. Indian and Métis Education Policy from Kindergarten to Grade MI, 1989- provides rationale and guidelines for integrating Indian and Métis materials into curricula. Organizing for Resource-Based Learning, 1991- discusses the school selection policy, building a collection and evaluating instructional resources. Selecting Fair and Equitable Materials, 1991- suggests strategies useful for recognition of bias and stereotypes, and provides rationale for teacher concern. Selection Aids for Saskatchewan Schools, 1990- lists resources useful in the selection process. Arts Education: A Curriculum Guide for Grade 9, 1992- provides goals, contexts and strategies for using resources. Analyzing Present Resources The bibliography should be cross-referenced with the school resource centre catalogue in order to identify suitable resources already present in the school library collection. The Media Index and the Strand Index are useful checklists for identifying resources in the school. Teachers may use these indexes to ensure a balance of print and non- print resources within each strand. Points for Consideration in Acquiring New Resources Resource needs not met by the present collection could be identified by teachers and teacher-librarian worldng together. Some materials may be useful for several grade levels and subject areas. Video programs available for duplication from Media House Productions are high quality programs that can be acquired at a.nominal cost. Please consult the current Media House Productions catalogue. Schools are responsible for costs of postage, a charge of $1.00 per title, blank tape and applicable taxes. Blank tapes may be supplied by the school or purchased from Media House Productions. Please refer to the Distributor Directory for the address and telephone numbers. Library wholesalers and publishers are sometimes willing to provide a display of recommended materials at the school division level to give educators the opportunity of previewing materials prior to purchase. Some distributors provide preview copies of materials on a trial basis or allow purchased items to be returned for a small restocking fee. For example, the Book Bureau will usually permit inappropriate items to be returned if they are in saleable condition. However, a 10% restocking fee of up to $2.00 per item will be charged. Schools interested in purchasing material should contact the distributor listed in the Distributor Directory at the end of this document or place a special order for all Canadian materials (except Media House Production's materials) through the Book Bureau. Contact the Book Bureau for further information. It should be noted that prices quoted do not include applicable taxes and are subject to change, but will serve as a guide to approximate costs. Schools are responsible for shipping fees. Book Bureau prices include shipping and handling fees, but in most other cases there will be an additional charge for shipping and handling. The 16 mm films listed are not available for purchase, but may be borrowed from Media House Productions. Saskatchewan Education has provided one copy of this bibliography to every school with students in grade 9. Additional copies are available from the Book Bureau. Schools may photocopy this publication. vi How to Use the Bibliography The bibliography is organized into six sections: .Titles and Descriptions, Community Resources/Magazines, Author Index, Strand Index, Media Index and Distributor
