The film stars Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook and Noah Taylor, and is based on Robert Heinlein's 1959 story All You Are Zombies. As the time-traveling agent tries to defuse the bomb, he encounters a man who tries to stop it and a shootout occurs between them. During this, a time travel agent manages to reach the bomb again to disarm it. The bomb explodes and burns his face. Someone comes up and helps him grab his time-travel device, which then transports him to the hospital in the future. While the agent is recovering from facial reconstruction, it has emerged that he tried to prevent an attack by the so-called Bomber Bomber in New York in 1975. After his recovery, he receives the last assignment. The agent moved to New York in the 1970s. As a bartender, he starts a conversation with one of the customers. The client, John, writes a true confessional article under the pseudonym Unmarried Mother. This pseudonym is explained by his own life story, which he tells the bartender. Born woman, client grew up as Jane in an orphanage. She excelled at school, but it was difficult for her to join. Jane decided that all the children she had would be brought up in a proper family, and thus avoided the relationship. As an adult, she applied for a program called Space Corp, which promised women the opportunity to go into space by giving astronauts intimate RRS, but she was later disqualified because of a health condition that had never been disclosed to her before, but which was very interesting to a man named Robertson. Jane later ran into a man who said he was expecting someone. Eventually they fell in love, but one day the man disappeared. Over time, Robertson approached Jane, showing that Space Corp was indeed part of the Provisional Agency, and now the agency wanted to recruit her. They cut off contact when it was revealed that Jane was pregnant with her former lover's child. During the caesarean section, doctors discovered Jane was intersex, internalized male genitalia as well as female genitalia. Complications during childbirth forced them to remove her female genitals, after which she was forced to undergo gender reassignment and start living as a man. In addition, the child was stolen by a mysterious man. Since then, Jane, who now goes John, has lived a bittersweet life, writing fiction as an Unmarried mother. The agent offers to take John back in time on the day that Jane met a man who later became her lover and left her, so that John can avenge and kill the man for ruining his (Jane's) life. In return, John will take over the job of agent for any term he wants. The agent shows off his time travel device, and the two jump on that day in 1963. John intends to kill his past lover until the moment when the lover first meets Jane. While waiting, John meets Jane, and when they start talking, John realizes that he is the man who later becomes Jane's lover. A child born of this self- enrichment is stolen by an agent who uses a time machine to take a child to an orphanage, 18 years ago in 1945. Thus, Jane, John, and their child are the same person, revealing the predestination paradox. The agent goes in 1975 to New York, where he helps a burned man from the beginning of the film. The agent returns in 1963, a few months after John was dropped off. He convinces John that John must leave Jane behind, and he uses the machine to take them both to the Provisional Agency. John now takes on the job of agent, so the agent can retire in 1975 in New York, not far from the day of the Bomber Fizzle attack. Upon arrival, the agent's device does not decommission as planned and can still be used. He was ordered to check the laundry at the time when there would be a Fizzle bomber. Bomber Fizzle turns out to be my own future I agent, currently suffering from psychosis as a result of excessive time travel. Bomber Fizzle insists that his actions will save and save more lives than lives lost, and that they will eventually lead to the strengthening of the Provisional Agency. He tries to convince the agent that the only way to finish the cycle is for the agent to save his life. The agent denies that he will ever become a Fizzle bomber and kills his future himself. The film finally shows that in 1975 John is a man who went to New York and was burned while defusing a bomb. His subsequent facial reconstruction significantly changes his appearance, and it is now clear that Jane, John, agent and Bomber Fizzle are all the same person. The creation of this agent was organized by Robertson to create an agent who has no ties to This temporary agent was responsible for both his own conception and death; he brought the paradox of predestination to the limit. Starring Ethan Hawke as Agent Doe (listed at the end of the film credits as The Bartender) Bartender) Snook as Jane/John (listed as Unmarried Mother) Monique Heath as 10-year-old Jane Olivia Sprague as 5-year-old Jane Noah Taylor as Mr. Robertson Madeleine West as Mrs. Stapleton Christopher Kirby as Agent Miles Freya Stafford as Alice Jim Knobel as Dr. Belfort Christopher Stollery as Dr. Tyler Koplin as Dr. Taylor (At one point in the internal monologue, the narrator quotes the title of the story.) On May 14, 2012, the Spirig brothers, who had already written the script, were announced as directors of Predestination. Peter Spirig explained in August 2014 that they remained close to Robert Heinlein's 1959 story. They did not try to parse the logic of more than 50 years of storytelling: ... so we (the Spirig brothers) were working on the premise that if there was a way to parss the logic, it would have been done by now. We kind of say, Let's trust the story and trust this logic, so we stuck to it very carefully. Hawke was selected for the lead role, while Wolfhound Pictures and Blacklab Entertainment collaborated to produce the film. Hawke explained in November 2014 that he was a longtime fan of the science fiction genre, but preferred his human elements rather than special effects: whether it was Robert Heinlein, Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K. Dick, Herbert Wells or anyone else... this kind of mind-bendy is science fiction where you can really attack themes in a new way. And when I read Predestination it was like: What e I just read?! Distribution Arclight Films bought international film rights, and on May 18, 2012, Tiberius Film acquired German film rights from Arclight. On May 23, 2012, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired American and some international film rights. Funding on September 5, 2012, Screen Australia announced that it would fund the film as part of an investment of AU$5.5 million ($5.6 million) in three feature films. Casting on February 28, 2013, Snook signed a contract to star in co-star, followed by Taylor, who joined the cast of the film on May 13, 2013. Also in 2013, Pinnacle Films won the rights to distribute the film in Australia and New York. Filming on February 19, 2013 was due to begin on February 25, 2013, and filming was scheduled to begin on April 8, 2013 in Melbourne, Australia, within six weeks. By May 13, 2013, filming had begun. The shooting took place at Docklands Studios Melbourne, about 1.5 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD. Some scenes were filmed in The monastery, located in the Melbourne suburb of Abbotsford, and in RMIT Design Hub. As for Snook, the brothers explained to the media that they always want to cast a lesser-known actor in their films. Michael Spirig later compared Snook's acting abilities to those of Australian actress Cate Blanchett. They also said they would prefer to shoot in Australia, with its discounts and incentives, but would shoot in any geographical location. Some Predestination images were released on February 5, 2014, and the first Australian trailer for the film was released on July 21, 2014. Another official trailer was released on September 25. The world premiere of Predestination took place on March 8, 2014 at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, USA. The film was selected for the opening gala of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) held at Hamer Hall on July 31, 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. In the MIFF's promotional material, predestination is described as a distinctive combination of science fiction, noir and crime fiction with a Beech stripe. The Sydney premiere of the film, which also featured a live session with directors, took place on August 6, 2014 at the Palace Verona cinema. The film was released in the UK on 13 February 2015.
