City of Toronto's Appointment Process to the Board of Trustees for the Art Gallery of Ontario

MM43.5.1 Grange Community Association www.grangecommunity.ca June 24, 2018 Mayor Tory and Members of City Council Toronto City Hall cc Ralph Daley, President, Grange Community Association Councillor Joe Cressy Stephan Jost, Director, Art Gallery of Ontario Re: MM 43.5 - City of Toronto's Appointment Process to the Board of Trustees for the Art Gallery of Ontario The residents of the Grange neighbourhood support this long overdue commitment to appoint the ward councillor (currently Ward 20 and Ward 24 in the future) to be one of City Council’s two appointments to the Board of Trustees of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). This is an important principle to be codified. In December 2016, the Grange Community Association (GCA), as well as the Chair, Board of Trustees of the AGO wrote to urge City Council to continue its past practice of appointing the Ward 20 Councillor. At that time, City Council decided otherwise. For the past few decades residents of the Grange neighbourhood have worked closely with the AGO on a variety of projects, the most recent of which is the acclaimed revitalization of Grange Park. Former Councillor Adam Vaughan, who served on the AGO Board, was central to the establishment of the Grange Park Advisory Committee (GPAC) and was able to present and explain the proposal to his trustee colleagues. Under the previous and subsequent councillors, including myself as an appointed councillor in 2014 and Councillor Cressy, GPAC leveraged Section 37 contributions and funding from a number of private donors, with AGO leadership on fund-raising. Grange residents will have an on-going relationship with the AGO through the establishment of the new Grange Park Community Council which is chaired by the current Ward 20 Councillor, Joe Cressy. On behalf of the Grange community, I urge City Council to approve Member Motion 43.5. Ceta Ramkhalawansingh Hon. President, Grange Community Association .
