The UMD campus represents a $50 million investment in educational facilities, with interconnected buildings for seasonal comfort and convenience for handicapped students. UMD is firmly committed to undergraduate education and prides itself on the fact that its size allows quality programs without depriving students of their individuality. The 400 full-time and part-time faculty are dedicated teachers, yet maintain active research interests. Founded as Duluth Normal School and progressing to Duluth State Teachers College, the institution became part of the University of Minnesota system in 1947. Since then, UMD has progressed to one of the finest institutions of higher education in the Upper Midwest. Located on the Lake Superior harbor front , the Duluth Arena has been the "Home of the Bulldogs" since 1966. Two NCAA national championship events have been held at the Duluth Arena, the last just· a year ago. The Duluth Arena is owned and operated by the City of Duluth and is approximately two miles from the UMD campus. The initial project, which includes arena and auditorium, was completed in 1966 at a cost of $6.5 million. The Duluth Arena has a capacity of 5,681 for hockey games and parking facilities can accommodate 1,200 vehicles . The ice surface dimensions at the Duluth Arena are 85 feet wide and 190 feet, with a 20-foot radius in the corners. 2 GUS HENDRICKSON HEAD COACH Like an expert architect, Minnesota-Duluth head hockey coach Gus Hendrickson has been designing and building a college program which has become respected as one of the most explosive and exciting in the nation. Hendrickson has found that it takes time and patience to construct a team that responds to his desires and needs. His 94-125-8 career mark after six seasons with the Bulldogs speaks well for a program that has been in the toughest college hockey conference in the country, the WCHA, just over 15 seasons. He has guided Minnesota-Duluth to the playoffs the past four years while compiling a 70-78-6 record during that same period. His team's highest finish in the WCHA came during 1978-79 when the Bulldogs were third and lost to eventual national champion Minnesota in the semi-finals of the league playoffs. Hendrickson began his coaching career at Grand Rapids, MN fashioning one of the strongest high school hockey pro- grams in Minnesota history. He compiled a 118-41-6 prep coaching record while guiding the Indians to three state tournament appearances, including the Minnesota High School championship in 1975. He was also voted Minne- sota's "High School Hockey Coach of the Year" twice during his seven seasons in Grand Rapids. A native of Eveleth, MN, he played college hockey at Michi- gan State under Amo Bessone from 1959 to 1962 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education, served in the U.S. Army until 1964 and completed work on his mas- ter's degree at Bemidji State University prior to his appont- ment at Grand Rapids High School in 1968. Hendrickson was appointed head coach at Minnesota-Duluth in 1975, succeeding Terry Shercliffe. Hendrickson and his wife, Peggy, have three children, Gusty, Mary and Melissa. 3 MIKE SERTICH ASSIST ANT COACH Mike Sertich joined the UMD hockey program as an assistant in 1975 with Gus Hendrickson after serving as Hendrickson's aid at Grand Rapids High School. Sertich coordinates scouting and recruiting for the Bulldogs while working with the defensemen and defensive play . His experience and knowledge have been an important pqrt of the rise of Bulldog hockey since Hendrickson's arrival on the UMD campus. A native of Virginia, MN, Sertich earned three varsity letters during his college playing career under Ralph Romano and Bill Selman at UMD from 1966 to 1969. He played in 64 games as a defenseman for the Bulldogs. Sertich grad- uated from UMD in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He is also an instructor in physical education at UMD. Sertich is married, and he and his wife, Audie, have three children, Scott, John and Lori . MIKE RANDOLPH ASSIST ANT COACH Not a new face in hockey circles around Duluth, Mike Randolph begins his first season as an assistant coach on the Bulldog hockey staff this season. Randolph will work with UMD's forwards and offen- sive play in 1981-82. He brings strong credentials to UMD, having played on the 1976 U.S. Olympic hockey team and coached two years at Cathedral High School in Duluth. Randolph, a native of Duluth, attended Cathedral High School and gained all-city and all-state honors. He was also associated with the Minnesota Fighting Saints and the New York Islander professional hockey organizations as a player. He currently is a nautalis instructor for a local fitness center in Duluth. 4 RICK MENZ EQUIPMENT MANAGER Menz enters his third season as equipment manager for the Bulldog hockey team. In addition to his duties with the UMD hockey team, he also works with other Bulldog sports teams during the fall and spring. Menz is in charge of lockerroom and equipment maintenance at the Duluth Arena for the Bulldog hockey team. He is also in charge of road game preparation for UMD during the hockey season . Menz is assisted by student manager Todd Manney, a senior this season at UMD. He is a 1973 graduate of UM D with a bachelor's degree in history. Menz worked for the Duluth Arena prior to his appointment as equipment manager at UMD. He and his wife, Sue , have one daughter, Laurie. BETTY OLAND TRAINER Oland takes over as trainer for the UMD hockey team this season after serving as a student assistant for the past five years .
