City Centre Community Profile 2018 Coquitlam is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in British Columbia, home to more than 141,000 people. At its heart is City Centre—Coquitlam’s downtown, made up of retail, office, industrial, cultural, recreational and educational services. City Centre has seen many changes since 1979, when the Coquitlam Centre shopping centre opened and about 5,000 people lived in the area. Over the years, visionary decisions were made to group together public buildings and amenities in City Centre and create an urban downtown with high-rise and mixed-use development.
