This preceded by the first ever ful Ifledged Housing Census from 1st to 15th December, 1980. In the Population Census, two questionnaires were used; a short one (Annexure-A) containing questions on names of household members, their relationship to head of house­ hold, sex, age, marital status, religion, literacy, ability to read the Holy Ouran (for Muslims only), educational attainment and language spoken in the household, and a long one (Annex­ ure-8) which included all questions of the short questionnaire and some more, namely, field of education, district of previous residence, duration of residence at present district, activity, employment status, occupation, industry, disability, etc. The long questionnaire was used for households selected on probability basis. The sample covered 100 percent of households in ur.ban areas and 7.5 percent in rural areas. This report comprises four parts. In Part-I, general description of the district and the main findings of the 1980 Housing Census and the 1981 Population Census have been high­ lighted. Part-I I and Part-I I I consist of Statistical Tables of the Housing Census and the Popu­ lation Census respectively. In Part-IV, various annexures mentioned in the text of this report have been given. The tabulation of topics common in both the questionnaires pertains to complete enumeration, whereas tabulation of additional topics in the long questionnaire are the estimates based on the sample data. The number and scope of statistical tables have been extended and cover data from the Housing Census (Annexure-D) also. Definitions and concepts of the topics in the ques­ tionnaires and tables are given at annexure-E. Map of Kharan district is at annexure-1. • Population Census, conducted once in a decade, is a gigantic operation of immense national importance. This report gives a demo.graphic profile of the district. Thousands of f field and office workers have contributed in producing this report. Our Organisation owes • a deep debt of gratitude to all those who worked at different stages of census operations and made their inputs for this final output. We also hope that the data presented in this report will be used for planning the progress of the people of this place.
