The Fisher defense held Utica to a fi eld goal in the second half while adding a touchdown for a 35-24 win. • Schmidt Passes Smith: Ryan Schmidt, a Utica College transfer, caught Fisher’s fi nal touchdown on Saturday in the 33-6 win over Springfi eld. With the touchdown reception the senior moved into sole possesion of third place on the college’s all-time career list. Schmidt moved past Jimmy Smith and Ryan Francis with his 18th career touchdown grab. Francis, a senior receiver, will be jostling with Schmidt the rest of the season for the two’s fi nal place in college history. • Didn’t Your Mother Teach You to Share: Coach Paul Vosburgh seems to have recruited some selfi sh football players. The Cardinals dominated time of possesion against the Pride this past Saturday. On Springfi eld’s home turf, Fisher had control of the ball for 38:15, just under 17 minutes more than its opponent. In fact, the Cardinals had possesion of the ball for over 11 minutes in both the fi rst and fourth quarters. • Moving Up in the World: Chad Monheim currently places 8th on the college’s all-time career list in points (151), passing Manny Pina (148) this past weekend. The kicker also ranks third all-time in fi eld goals (19). Dave Vosburgh has moved up another slot on the all-time tackles list to 8th place (249), surpassing Rich Converse (247) in Saturday’s win over Springfi eld. The senior also ranks fi rst in Fisher history with nine forced fumbles. • Fisher’s Stingy Defense: The Cardinals are allowing an average of just over fi ve points in their six wins this season. Fisher’s defense has 45 tackles for a loss of 130 yards, 12 interceptions, 11 sacks, 5 blocked kicks and 3 forced fumbles, 2 of which they recovered. Dave Vosburgh leads the Cardinals with 64 tackles, 37 of which are solo stops, along with seven pass breakups, seven pass defl ections and a forced fumble. • Among the Nation’s Best: Fisher’s defense is ranked among some of the best in the nation. The Cardinals are 18th in scoring defense (13.14 points/game) and 23rd in pass defense (141.57 yards/game). Those two statistics are also best in the Empire 8 Conference. A few individuals are also nationally ranked. Monheim ranks the highest at 8th in fi eld goals (1.43 FG/game). Schmidt is tied for 22nd in receptions per game (7.29) while Troy Sant holds a tie for 27th place in interceptions per game (0.57). In the conference, Schmidt and Sant hold the second spot in their categories. • Three and Out = W: Since the start of the 2010 season, the Cardinals have gone 15-3. In Fisher’s 15 wins, opponents are converting 30.4% on third downs (65-214). In three losses, however, opponents are 36-for-51 on third down attempts. Coincidentally, Fisher is allowing 12.1 points in the 13 wins and 51.0 in the defeats. Last week, Springfi eld was 4-for-12 on third downs, which is on pace with Fisher’s opponents average in its last 15 wins. • Utica Tries to Set Growney A-Blaise: The Pioneers current head coach, Blaise Faggiano, spent nine years as the defensive coodinator for Fisher through the 2007 season. In his fi rst matchup against his former team, Faggiano led Utica to its closest margin of defeat, 17-10 in 2008. In his fi nal season with the Cardinals, Fisher allowed just 14.9 points per game and 3.1 yards per rush. The Cardinals were one of the nation’s most dangerous defenses with a College-record 25 interceptions. • Pioneer-ing Visit: In ten meetings between the two schools, Fisher is outscoring Utica 401-82. The Cardinals have three shutouts in the ten meetings, all under Faggiano led defenses. In 2003, Fisher won the most lopsided match up between the colleges, winning 68-0. They also had back-to-back shutouts in 2006 (64-0) and 2007 (38- 0). The Pioneers had their closest attempt in beating Fisher in a 17-10 loss in 2008 and scored the most points against the Cardinals in 2010 with 24. • Out of the Shadow: Pioneer quarterback Andrew Benkwitt is a junior that has been leading Utica since his fi rst year when he replaced current Fisher football player Christian Bochicchio behind center. Benkwitt holds records for completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns for the Pioneers. The junior fi nished second in the Empire 8 Conference last season in nearly every passing category, behind Fisher’s Tim Bailey. He currently leads the league in passing yards per game (277.3) and total offense per game (281.3). Benkwitt has 1,941 passing yards on the season, needing just 59 yards against the Cardinals to reach the 2,000 yard plateau. He has 15 touchdown passes in 2011 compared to only four interceptions. • New Look: Today, Fisher will wear its new uniforms and helmets.
