When we performed this ballet for the first time here in the United States last spring, it was a highlight of our season. I’m happy to bring it back, both so audiences can revisit this compelling new ballet and so our dancers can dig even deeper into this haunting story. The power of Mary Shelley’s novel resides in its ability to engage on many levels—as a suspenseful story, an evocation of the universal longing for love and acceptance, an exploration of the dark recesses of the soul. Her protagonists struggle mightily—with their emotions, their sense of responsibility, their isolation, their fate—and choreographer Liam Scarlett deftly illuminates their inner turmoil through his choreography. For dancers, embodying these characters and revealing their subtleties is a creative challenge. I saw many of our dancers grow as artists last season as a result of dancing this ballet, and I look forward to seeing their nuanced interpretations this year. Beyond the choreography, Liam Scarlett, who has a deep affinity for CAL CLOSETS this novel, worked closely with a talented creative team to translate the intensity of Frankenstein into a ballet. Lowell Liebermann’s fantastic score, John Macfarlane’s detailed sets and costumes, David Finn’s lighting, and Finn Ross’ projection design all contribute to the ballet’s ominous atmosphere and the story’s impact. Like the novel, this ballet can be appreciated on many different levels—as visual spectacle, as incredible dancing, as powerful drama. I appreciate you coming to San Francisco Ballet. Your support enables us to take artistic risks— like commissioning new work—that keep the art form vibrant. Our 2017–18 Season culminates this spring with Unbound: A Festival of New Works. I invited 12 international choreographers to create 12 ballets for SF Ballet—all 12 world premieres will be unveiled over the Unbound festival’s four programs, April 20 to May 6. I hope you’ll join me in the audience for a rare look at what 12 of the most interesting minds in ballet are creating at this particular moment in time.
