I-5 Building Demolition Major Infrastructure Improvements Continue A number of capital projects are underway throughout La Mirada, and several more are scheduled to begin construction this summer. These projects build upon the City’s efforts in recent years to upgrade its infra- structure to meet modern development standards. The Valley View Grade Separation Project remains on track to be com- pleted by early fall. Traffic was recently opened under the bridge struc- ture, which allows vehicles to avoid stopping for passing trains. The $65 million project will enhance traffic safety, reduce the frequency of train horns, and provide other benefits to the surrounding neighborhoods and local economy. Caltrans has begun the process of demolishing several buildings it ac- quired along the I-5 Freeway in advance of the freeway widening project. The project design is nearing completion and Caltrans is currently com- Valley View Grade Separation pleting right-of-way acquisitions. Freeway construction is expected to begin in 2015. Another regional project, the Coyote Creek Bikeway, is also in prog- ress. Orange County is serving as the lead agency on this project, which will open Coyote Creek from La Mirada Boulevard to Hillsborough Drive to bicyclists with access also provided at Behringer Park. The Imperial Highway Median and Streetscape Improvements are making significant progress. A new traffic signal was installed at Val- ley View Avenue and Imperial Highway, and the medians are currently being constructed. Curb, gutter, and sidewalk improvements and the re- moval and replacement of street trees have also been completed. Work on this Los Angeles County cooperative project is scheduled for comple- tion in November. Several neighborhood street improvement projects are nearly ready to bid. The final phase of infrastructure improvements to the Foster Park neighborhood and the first phase of Measure I work in the neighbor- hoods north of Imperial Highway are scheduled to begin construction later this summer. Work will include street rehabilitation, slurry seal, curb and gutter repairs, installation of existing and new curb access ramps, removal and replacement of slotted cross gutters, and storm drain pipe repairs. “Projects such as the Valley View Grade Separation and I-5 Freeway expansion will benefit La Mirada and the region as a whole,” says Public Works Director Mark Stowell. “The Imperial Highway improvements and neighborhood infrastructure projects will enhance safety and com- munity beautification.” For additional information on these projects, contact Public Works at (562) 902-2385.
