A very warm welcome to the 2016 PANNZ Arts Market – our largest ever market, with a programme packed full of pitches, showcases and forums. The rich mix of work that is on display over the next three days has stretched and grown our programme in new directions, including a new showcase for music- we hope you’ll join us up the front on Monday night at the San Fran (Bathhouse). The past year has been one of evolution and growth for PANNZ, with the development of Tour Makers, the new touring agency brokering pathways for NZ work to travel to wider audiences. Make sure you don’t miss the Tour Makers forum on Tuesday to hear more about what has been achieved so far- and what the next year looks like for touring in NZ. The key drivers of our Arts Market are collaboration and conversation. Over the next three days we challenge you to explore what it means to collaborate- what possibilities open up when we have conversations together? What happens when we commit to building audiences together? Collaboration is not about gluing together existing egos- It’s about the ideas that never existed until after everyone entered the room. Big thanks to our core funder, Creative New Zealand, for the support and commitment they have shown to PANNZ. We’re delighted that CNZ are actively engaged with the market, and we’ve greatly enjoyed working with Cath, Belinda and the team to grow and develop both the market and Tour Makers. Thank you to the Executive members of PANNZ who have contributed their time, energy and experience to ensure that the market is a place where conversations can thrive, and a big thank you and welcome to Celia Walmsley, our new market Producer who has worked tirelessly to put the market together. As always we welcome any feedback you might have about your experience of the arts market- please do come and connect with Celia or any members of the executive. Megan Peacock-Coyle & James Wilson Co-Chairs, PANNZ. 2 welcome KEY SPONSORS & PARTNERS WELCOME FROM ARTS MARKET PRODUCER CELIA WALMSLEY Nga¯ mihi nui kia koutou katoa and welcome. It’s a real pleasure to be producing the Arts Market and somewhat serendipitous having been involved in an early committee and as a delegate. 2016 is a bumper year for PANNZ, with its new brands – The Arts Market and Tour Makers and over 60 artist presentations (almost double 2015) Arts Market 2016 is representative of the quality and maturity of the NZ arts sector. New in 2016 The Arts Market Music Showcase on Monday 29 Feb, which is part of your registration, is a dedicated platform for music artistsand contributes to the marvellous groundwork set by previous Sounds conferences. The theme for 2016 is Working in Partnership, reflecting the way many arts organisations now together to make tours happen. It’s not a matter of simply buying and selling these days but of each partner putting in what they can to tour work. Many of the forums centre around this theme and include conversations on researching partners, developing long term relationships, acquiring skills in joint venturing, understanding industry trends and focusing on targeted audience development and marketing collateral. The room is full of knowledge – each of us is an expert in some area and novice in others. The Arts Market is our opportunity to share that knowledge, to learn as individuals and groups and to grow as a collective arts sector. As always the Arts Market could not happen without the support of our incredibly generous partners in particular Creative New Zealand and Wellington City Council. Huge thanks also to the San Francisco Bathhouse, iTicket, DANNZ, Ticketmaster, EVANZ, Soar Printing, Q Theatre, Patronbase, Crombie Lockwood, MACs Function Centre, New Zealand Festival, Museum Hotel, CQ Hotel, NZ Fringe Festival, National Touring Selector, Helen Cisowski, Gerry Paul, Trina Edwards and Toi Whakaari and students for their stupendous support. To the wonderful PANNZ team and executive - James Wilson, Megan Peacock Coyle, Sarah Anderson, Dolina Wehipeihana, Philip Tremewan, Louise Gallagher, Drew James, Andrew Potvin, Lesley-Anne Carey, and our amazing interns Natasha Young and Joshua Tucker - I THANK YOU all. In the last 12 months since we presented at the 2015 Arts Market, we have worked closely with artists, producers, venues and festivals to deliver 4 national tours. Our first productions includedModern Maori Quartet, Daffodils, Little Shop of Horrors (Live Live Cinema) and The Mooncake and the Kumara. These shows were presented in a range of venues of festivals, including Baycourt Theatre, Oamaru Opera House, The Regent Theatre Palmerston North, Floorpride Civic theatre Marlborough, San Fran Bathhouse, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, Nelson Festival, Christchurch Festival and Tauranga Festival. 2016 looks to be an even more exciting year ahead for Tour-Makers, as we head out on a North Island tour immediately following the Arts Market and after its’ Auckland season at Q Theatre, with Silo Theatre’s production of The Book of Everything. It will tour to TSB Showplace in New Plymouth, The Regent Theatre in Palmerston North, Napier Municipal Theatre and the Founders Theatre in Hamilton. Be sure to tell your friends and families in these towns about this great show – it is one not to be missed! We also have plans to tour at least 3 more shows this year, and look forward to talking to presenters and JV partners about these opportunities during the next 3 days during the Arts Market.
