Zooniverse projects are driven by the combination of contributions from a large number of volunteers in the service of both research and education, and a recent grant from the Helmsley Foundation supports the development of projects in the preclinical sciences. These may be stand-alone, experimental projects which break new ground or involve adding functionality to our ground-breaking project builder which allows research teams to build and manage their own projects. You’ll be working in a team of web developers and researchers, as well as collaborating with Zooniverse teams in the USA. We use cutting-edge technology around to provide the best tools to scientists using the platform; as the lead scientist in the development team you will contribute to the design of such tools, ensuring that the functionality is of use to researchers in all fields, but especially in preclinical research. You will be responsible for understanding the pre-clinical research community, attending conferences and working with project partners on behalf of the team. There will also be space to carry out your own research in the growing field of citizen science. There is opportunity to travel if you want it, and to work with an extremely diverse group of people spanning natural and medical sciences, social science and the humanities. Responsibilities 1. Lead the development of new projects related to the field of preclinical research on the Zooniverse platform. 2. Be responsible for understanding the needs and requirements of research teams making use of the platform, particularly via the project builder tool 3. Work with the rest of the development team to design changes and additional functionality for the platform which reflect these needs. 4. Represent the Zooniverse at conferences and meetings, giving talks to a wide variety of national and international audiences. 5. Assist the PI with developing a strategy for grant writing for the platform, and responding to appropriate calls as they appear. 6. Along with collaborators and the rest of the team, carry out research into the methods of online citizen science and/or carry out scientific research using the platform. 7. Be a point of contact for those making use of our platform. 8. Communicate the work carried out via academic publication in appropriate journals. 9. A PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject – typically science, computer science or education. 2. Experience of working with large datasets 3. The technical skills required to deal with large data (e.g. basic coding in Python, R or SQL) 4. A strong publication record in relevant academic fields or a track record in leading academic projects. 5. The ability to work independently, and to manage multiple demands on one’s time effectively. 6. Ability to work as part of a diverse team in an interdisciplinary fashion. 7. Exemplary written and oral communication skills. Desirable 1. A demonstrated familiarity or experience with citizen science. 2. Mastery of the tools appropriate for large-scale data science. 3.
