Page 2 From the Editor Welcome to the April edition of the St Philip’s Magazine. Firstly you may have noticed that this is a completely free edition. If you need more copies then they can be collected at the Burwash Stores, Broad Oak Stores or from a box in the Lych Gate at Burwash Common, whilst stocks last. Due to the problems with the Coronavirus (Covid19) all of our churches are currently closed to try to slow down the spread of the virus. This means that this month’s magazine does not carry any services for the foreseeable future. There is, in the centre of the magazine, a 16 page pullout booklet to help you with Home Worship. Please use this as often as you need to. Much of our usual content has not been available for this month’s edition but I am hopeful that it will be back over the next couple of months or so. There is however an interesting article about Beatrix Potter on the Gardener’s Corner page on page 11. Many regulars have still been included namely The Pavilion News, After Eight Club, Residents Association, Seagulls over Burwash, Snooker results and Burwash Flower Arrangers. Jim and Mary Smith are currently at their mission in Ghana and Jim has produced two more articles under the Serving Africa headings. These have become regular reports and will continue to be in the magazine for at least the next 3 months. Peter Thompson Editor Tel: 01435 882856 e‐mail: [email protected] .uk Facebook.com/. CHURCH CLEANING (Holy Dusters) ‐ April 5th Pat Lewis 12th Gill Cairncross 19th Jane Lloyd 26th Anne Street BRASS CLEANING John and Joan Logan have kindly agreed to take on the Brass Cleaning Prayer Opportunities There are many and varied opportunities to pray and be prayed for at St Philip’s. Here are a just a few. The church is usually open during daylight hours. There's a copy of the electoral roll in the church to help you pray for others. Jim and Mary Smith have small groups of people who pray regularly for any who needs healing. Every three months Jim and Mary take the current list to a wellknown places of healing and pray privately for the list. The next list is now open and they will be praying at the Firle Beacon. But this does seem to be correctly attributed to Martin Luther, the monk who kickstarted the Reformation. He lived in the time of regular outbreaks of plague and wrote this to a friend who wanted to know the Christian response. It was subsequently published. Unfortunately, the English text is copyrighted by a US publisher but here’s a summary in 21st Century bullet points instead of 16th Century flowing prose: • He begins by praying for God’s protection • He will keep clean and both take and give the recommended medicine • He avoids places where his presence is not needed, lest he become infected and then pass it on to another who might then die • But he will not avoid going to places when a neighbour needs his presence • He accepts that this disease might be the way he will die but he is not afraid of God’s judgement if he has done these things • He declares this to be a proper faith – fearing God, being neither brash nor foolhardy and not tempting God That last point he makes reminds me of Jesus’ time in the desert, which we commemorate as the season of Lent. In the depths of hunger, he hears the devil telling him he can jump off the highest tower on the temple in Jerusalem because, and here he quotes from the bible, “angels will protect you.” Jesus retorts with another passage, “Do not put God to the test.” But, when it was needed, he went to the cross and he died. Travelling in India for the first time was a surreal experience. My driver was on the wrong side of a motorway, doing well over 70mph and driving straight towards the oncoming headlights of two trucks travelling side by side with only a couple of feet gap between them.
