Advise governmental agencies and private organizations on strengthening regulations pertaining to the welfare of captive elephants. Design sanctuary facilities for needy elephants. Develop and teach mahouts and caregivers to use Compassionate Elephant Management (CEM), a non-dominant management system that allows trainers to work with elephants in a free-contact environment, without the use of pain and intimidation. Help elephant care professionals develop and use an integrative holistic approach to medical care. Act as an expert witness to promote the application of sound science to elephant welfare. Elephant Welfare Consultant 1995-present Hohenwald, Tennessee Provide assistance for elephants nationally and internationally: facility evaluation, design and development; elephant behavior assessment and modification; elephant training assessment and instruction; elephant foot care and foot care instruction; development of elephant training techniques; expert witness and inspection services; advise on humane treatment standards for the development of regulations. Elephant relocation, social integration, rehabilitation and recovery. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee Co-FounderPresident/CEO, 1995-2010 Hohenwald, Tennessee Established the largest natural habitat sanctuary in the U.S. that attracted international attention for its innovative approach to elephant management in captivity. Developed Passive Control, a non-dominant elephant management system designed to meet an 1 elephant’s needs while giving resident elephants complete physical freedom and the opportunity to make their own choices. Arranged for the release of 24 elephants to the Sanctuary over 15 years. Hired and trained caregiver staff. Designed and produced educational programs for the public. Worked with governmental agencies and private organizations to strengthen regulations pertaining to the welfare of captive elephants. Spoke as an expert witness in defense of sound science regarding elephant welfare. Provided assistance for elephants nationally and internationally. • Coordinated the rescue of the first elephant ever confiscated by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, who the agency then placed at the Sanctuary in 2003. • Supported programs to help elephants internationally. Provided funds for anti- poaching forest patrol in government forests and a mobile veterinary clinic that provided free services for hundreds of elephants living in captivity (India). Provided underwriting for fuel for anti-poaching air patrols in Amboseli National Park, (Africa) and supplemental food for elephant living in captivity (Thailand). • Pioneered tuberculosis research and treatment in collaboration with a team of veterinarians under the direction of Dr. Susan Mikota, Elephant Care International. Conducted non-invasive research of land use and the impact of substrate on elephant feet, rehabilitation social behavior. Conducted non- invasive study of PTSD with Dr. Gay Bradshaw, the Kerulos Center. Tarra Productions Owner 1975-1995 Ojai, California Exhibition, training, and care for female Asian elephant named Tarra, who performed in television, motion pictures and circus and zoo shows. Traveled throughout the US, Canada and abroad performing in a number of circuses, including Circus Gatini and the Big Apple Circus. African Lion Safari, 1991-1992 Visiting elephant manager Ontario, Canada Oversaw the breeding of two zoo elephants on breeding loan. Zoo Manager, 1988-1992 Elephant supervisor at the Bowmanville Zoo in Ontario, Canada, and Racine Zoo in Racine, WI Consultancy Positions 2 Captive Elephant Management and Welfare Consultant 1998 Provided humane training to facilitate medical procedures and negotiated for the humane treatment and release of the 30 “Tulie elephants” held in a warehouse under dire conditions, and previously exposed to brutal training sessions in Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa. Zoo Consultant 1992-2002 Chehaw Wild Animal Park, Albany, Georgia. Assisted in the development of a comprehensive elephant management program. Consulted with the keeper staff regarding elephant and keeper training. Helped to develop and implement safety procedures and care and management protocols. Consulted with management regarding facility improvement. Orchestrated the retirement of the zoo’s elephants to a sanctuary.
