Report of Investigations 2009-1 SEDIMENTOLOGY, STACKING PATTERNS, AND DEPOSITIONAL SYSTEMS IN THE MIDDLE ALBIAN– CENOMANIAN NANUSHUK FORMATION IN OUTCROP, CENTRAL NORTH SLOPE, ALASKA by David L. LePain, Paul J. McCarthy, and Russell Kirkham Published by STATE OF ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL & GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS 2009 Report of Investigations 2009-1 SEDIMENTOLOGY, STACKING PATTERNS, AND DEPOSITIONAL SYSTEMS IN THE MIDDLE ALBIAN–CENOMANIAN NANUSHUK FORMATION IN OUTCROP, CENTRAL NORTH SLOPE, ALASKA by David L. LePain, Paul J. McCarthy, and Russell Kirkham 2009 Front cover photo. View, from a helicopter, showing the uppermost Torok Formation and overlying Nanushuk Formation. The dark and light gray rocks exposed along the lower third of the slope are silty shales, siltstones, and argillaceous sandstones of the Torok Formation. These lithologies grade upward to silty shales, siltstones, and hummocky cross-stratifi ed sandstones of the Nanushuk Formation. The resistant benches visible higher up on the east face are stacked shoreface and delta-front coarsening-upward successions. The benches visible up from the prominent break in slope are delta-front and distributary channel deposits; the partially tundra-covered benches visible in the distance below the skyline are fl uvial conglomerate and sandstone bodies in the Nanushuk. See text for details and fi gure 14 for a measured section from this location. Photograph by Russell Kirkham. This DGGS Report of Investigations is a fi nal report of scientifi c research. It has received technical review and may be cited as an agency publication. and supplies of groundwater and construction materials; the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures; and shall conduct such other surveys and investigations as will advance knowledge of the geology of Alaska.” ii CONTENTS Abstract
