T hursday, January 25 On the morning news: Federal housing minister, Alfonso Gagliano, says if Ontario isn't spending Ottawa's housing money properly, he'll intervene. The comments come after a Toronto city councillor accused the Harris government of pocketing millions of dollars in federal money that should be given to municipalities. Margo Kelly's report. On Metro Morning: Andy Barrie interviews Mark Guslits, the city's man in charge of the Let's Build Program . The program is intended to stimulate interest from developers to build affordable housing. On Ontario Today: At one time, landlords would negotiate with a tenant who was behind on the rent. No more. According to tenant advocates (such as Parkdale Community Legal Services ) the lifting of rent controls has given landlords a financial incentive to evict tenants who've been around too long in favour of a new tenant who will pay more rent. That theory appears to be backed up by the steady increase in eviction rates since rent controls were removed. Mary Wiens looks at what eviction numbers can tell us about a process that's stacked against tenants. Mary Weins on Ontario Today.
