Thirty years ago, Team USA won a record 16 medals at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Fri., Aug. 22 including five gold medals: men’s team; Mary Lou Retton, all-around; Bart Con- 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. ner, parallel bars; Peter Vidmar, pommel horse; and Julianne McNamara, uneven bars. This was the first time the USA had won an Olympic gold medal in gymnas- tics since 1932, and the first ever for the women’s all-around title. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the United States won a total of nine med- als, including both the men’s (Paul Hamm) and women’s (Carly Patterson) all- around golds and both team silver medals. Hamm’s win remains the only time a U.S. man has won the Olympic all-around crown.
