Our “Deer Free Zone” List

Our “Deer Free Zone” List

Our “Deer Free Zone” List *Here’s the fine print: Unfortunately no plants are 100% deer proof, this is a list of the plants that are least favored by the deer in our area. Generally, deer tend to avoid plants that have hairy leaves, thorns, or strong smells. Although deer will eat anything when they are hungry enough! All selections are subject to change. (This is a work-in-progress list which is still in research & development. The list includes only the plants that we try to stock regularly or seasonally. We truly apologize if your experiences differ from this list, please email [email protected] for any discrepancies. An asterisk * indicates it shows resistance to rabbits as well, again not 100% resistance… PERENNIALS Enjoying Morning Sun/Afternoon Shade Botanical Name Common Name If You Want To Feed The Deer… Acanthus spinosus* Bear's Breaches* Here’s A List Of Some Of Their Favorites: Aconitum* Monkshood* Ajuga* Bugleweed* Alchemilla* Lady’s Mantle* Daylilies Aruncus dioicus* Goat's Beard* Hostas (dwarf varieties less desirable) Astilbe* Astilbe* AstilbeHydrangea Begonia grandis* Hardy Begonia* Roses Bergenia* Pigsqueak To Be Continued… Brunnera macrophylla* Alkanet/Bugloss* Chelone* Rose Turtlehead* Convallaria* Lily of the Valley* Corydalis* Corydalis Dicentra* Bleeding Heart* Epimedium* Barrenwort* Euphorbia* Wood Spurge* FERNS* Most Ferns* Integrated Pest Management Strategies: Galium odoratum Sweet Woodruff* Best method of defense when Geranium* Hardy Geranium/Cranesbill* vulnerable plants are in the GRASS-Carex, Acorus* Sedge* landscape is a barrier method Heuchera* Heuchera* (fencing, netting, mono filament) Heucherella* Heucherella* Use deer resistant plants Cimicifuga Snakeroot Locate desirable plants far from Helleborus * Lenten Rose* edge of woods Lamium* Deadnettle* Use “scare devices”… like dogs Ligularia* Ligularia* Use repellents and rotate the Lobelia* Cardinal Flower products frequently like Lysimachia* Gooseneck Loosestrife* LiquidFence, Repellex, Milorganite, Myosotis* Forget Me Not* human hair, Irish Spring soap Pachysandra* Pachysandra* Young trees must be protected Polemonium* Jacob’s Ladder* from bucks scratching their antlers, Polygonatum odoratum * Solomon's Seal* we sell a deer guard that allows air Pulmonaria* Lungwort* flow, but prevents antler damage.
