UIW'f FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA TECHNICAL REPORT NO. 246 1971 FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA Technical Reports FRB Technical Reports are research documents that are of sufficient importance to be preserved, but which "for some reason are not appropriate for primary scientific publication. No restriction is placed on subject matter and the series should renect the broad research interests of FRS. These Reports can be cited in publications, but care should be taken to indicate their manuscript status. Some of the material in these Reports will eventually appear in the primary scientific literature. Inquiries concerning any particular Report should be directed to the issuing FRB establishment which is indicated on the title page. FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA TECHNICAL REPORT NO. 246 A PRELIMINARY BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE TRAllL FISHERY AND GROONDFISH OF THE PACIFIC COAST OF NORTH AMERICA By [)wane Dal and C. R. Some impetus for preparation of such a bibliography was given by discussion at meetings of the Technical Sub-Coumittee of the International 1 Trawl Fishery Cormnittee in 1965 , Subsequent correspondence between Sub Committee members concerning species inclusion and subject matter of the bibliography suggested that a complete annotated type, while highly desirable, would take an inordinate time for compilation. It was agreed to work toward early publication of a preliminary bibliography which would be of value to groundfish workers on the Pacific coast. In an early compilation of literature, it was found that there were many references to work which had been conducted on the spiny dogfish <Sgualus acanthias) from Atlantic waters. The references appeared because the scientific nomenclature is the same as that for the Pacific dogfish. The relevance of these papers was not questioned; certainly much of the work would apply to the Pacific dogfish. However, it was felt that a thorough search of the European literature might prove difficult and thus yield only a partial bibliography on .§.. acanthias. For this reason, only the references to Pacific dogfish were retained in the bibliography. It was also found that there were many references to groundfish species in the popular outdoor-type and trade magazines and papers. However, many such merely cited existence of some species within its known range. The inclusion of these types of reference would only pad the bibliography and make it less meaningful. They were, therefore, not included. A further decision was made to exclude papers on fisheries science methodology except in those cases with application to species on the Pacific coast. We thus excluded Beverton and Holtls (1957), liOn the dynamics of exploited fish populations," and included Ricker's (1958), "Handbook of computa tions for biological statistics of fish populations," which contains reference and examples concerning groundfish on this coast. In addition, papers pertaining solely to the Pacific halibut <Hippoglossus stenolepis) were excluded. This species is the object of study by the International Pacific Halibut Coumission and it was felt that body possessed a complete bibliography on the halibut. lThe Technical Sub-Coumittee is composed of groundfish workers from Canada and west coast agencies of the United States, and was established by the Trawl Fishery Cem:nittee in 1959 to examine problems pertaining to the trawl fisheries of the two countries along the Pacific coast of North America. Both the Cem:nittee and the Sub·Coumittee have met annually since that time. - 2 - Readers who might use the following list of publications should consider it a preliminary list and we would appreciate being informed of omissions of consequence. It should also be noted that there are a few entries of uncertain relevance which we were unable to examine, e.g•• Kuronuma (1941), Sakun (1961). The papers in the current compilation have been assigned numbers which also appear in a following list of species or subjects. ACKNCMLEDGMENTS The assistance of Mrs. E. Kehler and Mrs. J. Smith in checking a large number of the references is gratefully acknowledged. - 3 - BIBLIOGRAPHY A 1. ABAKUMOV. V. A. 1964.
