The successful implementation of financial inclusion plans has far reaching consequences, which can help many people come out of abject poverty conditions. Financial inclusion provides formal identity, access to payments system & deposit insurance. In this chapter the researcher will give profile of the study area and current status of financial inclusion. A researcher has to know the profile of the study area along with its geographical and socio-economic conditions and has to know the environmental situation of the study area. Thus, it is appropriate to present the focus of study on understanding its development potentials and detailed information about the emphasis on the socio-economic profile of the study area. This chapter has two sections, the first section deals with the overview of Ahmednagar District in general and the second section particularly deals with the Index of Financial Inclusion (IFI) at taluka level. 5.2 An overview of Ahmednagar District: Ahmednagar district is the largest district in area in Maharashtra comprising 14 taluka places. Ahmednagar district is on the fore-front in co-operative movement in the country owing to the strong presence of 16 Sugar factories, distilleries, spinning mills, paper mills, milk federation, dairy etc. in the co­ operative sector and a few co-operative industrial estates. The district has well road network connecting it to all the mega markets in the country. It can be said that the district is the 'Gateway' of Marathwada and Vidarbha to Mumbai. The north belt of the district is richer in water resources with the help of Godavari and Pravara rivers and south belt is dry land except few spots in Shrirampur and Pamer. Ahmednagar district has 14 tehsils viz. Ahmednagar, Akole, Jamkhed, Karjat, Kopergaon, Newasa, Parner, Pathardi, Rahuri, Sangmner, Shevgaon, Shrirampur, Shrigonda and Rahata. There are 14 Panchayat Samities, 18 cities, 1581 villages, 1 Mahanagar Palika, 8 Nagar Parishads and 1311 Gram Panchayats. 142 Chart No. 5.1 The Map of Ahmednagar District Ahmednagr is the largest district of Maharashtra State with geographical aiea of 17418 k.m., which is 5.66% of area of Maharashtia State. Out of total areas 391.5 sq. k. m. is urban area and remaining 16,656.5 sq. k. m. is rural area. Ahmednagar is centrally located in western Maharashtra. In Ahmednagar district there were 14 blocks or talukas and 1,581 villages and 1,308 gram sabhas. Ahmednagar district is the second largest economy in the five districts of Nashik Division. It contribution to the GDP of Maharashtra is 3.22 per cent. 5.2.1 Population status in Ahmednagar District: As extent of financial inclusion largely depends upon the demographics of population, the researcher has included the demographic information about the population residing in Ahmednagar district in the present study. The above Table 5.2 shows the age-wise group structure of population in Ahmednagar district as per census of 2001. Total population of the district was 40,40,642 out of 32,36,945 was rural and 8,03,697 was urban. Below nineteen years old children were 17,49,522 which was 43.30 per cent to total population as well as above sixty years old population was 3,98,979 which was 9.88% to total, which shows that the unproductive population was 53.18% during 2001. So far our study is concerned; we will be measuring financial inclusion by considering adult population only which means only 46.82% of population would be included in the scope of our study. • Following are the important statistics of Census 2011 1. In 2011, Ahmednagar had population of 4,543,159 of which male and female were 2,342,825 and 2,200,334 respectively. 2. In 2001 census, Ahmednagar had a population of 4,040,642 of which males were 2,083,053 and remaining 1,957,589 were females 3. Ahmednagar district population constituted 4.04 percent of total Maharashtra population. 4. In 2001 census, this figure for Ahmednagar District was at 4.17 percent of Maharashtra population. 144 5. There was change of 12.44 percent in population compared to population as per 2001 census. In the previous census of 2001, Ahmednagar District recorded increase of 19.80 percent to its population compared to 1991. 6. With regard to Sex Ratio in Ahmednagar, it stood at 939 per 1000 male compared to 2001 census figure of 940. 7. In census enumeration, data regarding child under 0-6 age were also collected for all districts including Ahmednagar. There were total 5,56,014 children under age of 0-6 against 5,89,706 of 2001 census. 8. Of the total Ahmednagar population for 2011 census, 20.09 percent lives in urban regions of the district while 79.91 percent lives in rural areas. Year- 2011-12 Table no. 5.3 shows the talukawise distribution of the populationas per the 2001 census. Ahmednagar has fourteen talukas inlcuding 40,40,642 population. Out of this total population 3236945(80.1%) is living in rural areas and remaining 8,03,697 (19.9%) population lives in urban areas. Out of fourteen five talukas have zero urban population (viz. Akole, Newasa, Shevgaon, Rahuri and Karjat). However, the distribution of population in district is uneven. Majority of the population is living in Nagar taluka (15.0%), followed by Sangamner (10.9%). 145 5.2.2 Tahsil wise Population density of Ahmednagar District: Tahsil wise Population density of Ahmednagar District The term population density refers to the number of persons per square kilometer.
