Greece Preserving the Past for the Future: Athens and Beyond Program Dates: May 30th - July 2nd, 2011 Program Description Rutgers’ Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS http://chaps.rutgers.edu/), in collaboration with CYA Athens/DIKEMES, offers a unique opportunity for students to pursue a summer program combining a 3-credit course with either a 3 credit internship within a major museum or cultural institution or 3-credit archaeological fieldwork experience excavating at the ancient municipality of Aixonides Halai at Voula. Students will be based in Athens in apartments near their academic base at the Center for Hellenic and Mediterranean Studies, and a 10-15 minute walk from the Acropolis. The program is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. “Preserving the Past for the Future: Athens and Beyond” explores Athens’ rich cultural inheritance – buildings, monuments and remains celebrating its ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Frankish, Ottoman, and neo-classical past- and the challenges of preservation within the urban framework of a modern global city. Classes are conducted on site and take advantage of resident experts in the preservation field. Visits to Greece’s “second city,” Thessaloniki, the resort city and former capital of Greece, Nafplio, and the World Heritage sites of Mycenae, Tiryns, and Epidaurus provide insights into preservation initiatives beyond Athens and UNESCO’s World Heritage program, which is transforming heritage tourism throughout the world. CHAPS Internship/Fieldwork module provides invaluable hands-on experience at one of Athens’ major cultural institutions, such as the Benaki, Goulandris, or Stoa (Agora) museums, or the opportunity to undertake archaeological fieldwork at the important site of Aixonides Halai, an ancient municipality associated with the modern town of Voula, a coastal suburb some 20 kilometers from the center of Athens. Known for its splendid sea-views and low pine hills, the site, near the church of “Aghios Nikolaos Pallon,” is a block from the sea and close to the recently discovered Agora. Under the direction of the Greek Archaeological service, the ongoing excavation has yielded rich remains from the Classical, Roman, and Byzantine periods.
