In 1984-5 we had new tools at our disposal including the Fairlight Computer Music Instrument (CMI) which I used to create the rhythmic percussion figures, and the wonderfully versatile Yamaha DX7 which was a landmark in the development of the synthesiser. I’d read the scripts but it was only when I saw the edited episodes on VHS that my ideas started to take shape. The greatest slice of luck was having Graeme Harper as director. He was able to explain exactly what he wanted from me, a great advantage! ROGER LIMB, 2012 The BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s long association with Doctor Who started at its very inception in 1963, with Delia Derbyshire’s ground-breaking realisation of Ron Grainer’s theme music and Brian Hodgson using his mother’s front-door key and a denuded piano to make the unearthly sound of the TARDIS. But while Brian (and later, Dick Mills) continued to work on the sound effects, the Workshop’s contribution to the music came in fits and starts until 1980, when they finally took it on full time. Peter Howell heralded this new participation with his new recording of the theme, and various RWS composers then shared composing duties. The Caves of Androzani was Roger Limb’s seventh of eight contributions to the series, and the first of his two very successful collaborations with director Graeme Harper. At this time, the programme was (like all television) made with monophonic sound, and BBC technical requirements specified that music supplied for programmes should also be in mono. For this reason, there is no stereo mix of the original score. For this CD, I have essentially retained the mono, but placed it in a subtle stereo space that I hope will prove pleasing to the ear!
