Namor the Sub-Mariner - urbane board director and two-fisted Avenging SonBy H. BalaReprinting issues #10-18, NAMOR VISIONARIES Vol. 2 continues John Byrne's memorable early 1990s run featuring everyone's favorite temperamental fishman (even Arthur Curry's not this broody). In Volume 1, by introducing a pre-existing blood condition that rendered the regal sea lord subject to bouts of madness and berserker rage, Byrne justified Namor's past atrocities. Byrne then began paving the way to Namor's achieving hero status.I remember being so blown away when I first read this comic book more than two decades ago. I remember that, going in, I doubted Byrne's ability to convert me into a Namor fan, and was I wrong. I loved the sweeping changes Byrne effected in this character. It's a stroke of genius that he reinvented the Sub-Mariner from a green bikinied despot to an impeccably attired business mogul. See, Namor had an epiphany and so opted to change his modus operandi. To safeguard the ocean and its denizens from man's excesses, he went corporate. He founded Oracle, Inc., a global enterprise dedicated to keeping the seas unpolluted. Also, his ankle wings withered away, thus depriving the Avenging Son the power and freedom of flight.Volume 2 opens to two battle-scarred warhorses trading stories. Namor and Captain America voice their unease regarding Germany's reunification, both fearing that dormant factions might now feel empowered to revive the old Reich. Namor makes up his mind to visit his holdings in Germany, ostensibly, but really he wants to poke around. In a secluded tenement in Berlin, he runs into a recluse of the great war, Master Man, newly roused from suspended animation and now clamoring for his comatose wife, Warrior Woman, to be revived as well. I'm only surprised that Namor didn't give out a lusty "Imperious Rex!" before springing into action. This eventful arc spans three chapters and concludes with a double-sized issue (#12) that reunites the World War II super-team, the Invaders.I appreciate Byrne's craftsmanship and his attention to detail. I love how he embeds Namor so firmly in the Marvel universe. The Sub-Mariner has never been so center-staged. Byrne reinvigorates him partly by revisiting his place in the Silver Age of Marvel Comics, by touching on his past misadventures, a huge chunk of which were chronicled in the pages of FANTASTIC FOUR. Issue #13 is a fantastic example of this as Namor at last is tried in court for his past actions against humanity. It's the little details that I salivate over, like the brief discomfort brought about by Thor's swearing on the Bible before testifying. The rest of the collection covers Namor's excursions to the dying undersea kingdom of Atlantis - wherein he meets his former dead but now addled wife, Lady Dorma - and then to the hidden Savage Land, source of the poison steadily killing the folk of Atlantis. In the Savage Land, Namor stumbles on a conspiracy to murder the planet, a conspiracy that ties into a tantalizing ongoing sub-plot concerning Daniel Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist, who himself was just resurrected from the dead. Also, Namor gets a pet. That once was a super-villain.John Byrne drew the book for 25 issues and wrote it for 32 issues, and so I expect at least a Volume 3 to come out. I also wouldn't at all mind those later issues showcasing Jae Lee's moody artwork. Meanwhile, let's give John Byrne his due. This was a golden age for him, an extended period in which his words and pictures equated to sensational storytelling. Guy made me develop a crush on Namorita. He made me like an unlikable dude.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is the continuation of Byrne's "new" (at the time) ...By jenesuispasgothThis is the continuation of Byrne's "new" (at the time) take on Namor. It is well narrated, and very well drawn. It really is a pity that there is no announcement to follow up with the John Byrne / Jae Lee partnership that followed, and which explained much of why Namor is the brutal/violent king of Atlantis we tend to see in the various comics nowadays.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
