PECKHAM 10 The Rooms of the Society are open daily , from a . m . 4 m 1 . to p . , Saturdays until p . m In order to increase the income and enable the Society to care for the collections and mak e them available , it is desired of to enlarge the membership , the dues and fees which are as follows Life membership Sustaining membership Annual Associate The E ar Recor of the Town of New ort ly ds p , now in the custody of the Newport Historical Society f At the time o the British evacuation Of Newport , in 1 9 October, 77 , the early records Of the town were carried fl In of away in a small vessel accompanying the eet , charge the Tory Sheriff, Walter Chaloner . r e This vessel was wrecked in Hell Gate , and the records mained under water for several days , becoming thoroughly soaked before they were rescued and placed unopened in a New York store house . 1 82 When they were returned to Newport , in 7 , it was found that the earliest and latest volumes were completely ri sh a destroyed , and the others were in a dilapidated and pe ble condition . They were placed in the vault at the old City Hall , but there were no facilities for their proper care , and even the tenderest handling produced further decay . AS these old documents are necessary in Obtaining clear titles to property , back to the early days , and are Of great i value and interest to antiquarians, the Newport Histor cal Society felt that an effort Should be made to rescue the to papers from such an unfortunate condition , and agreed care for them and superintend their restoration . Under a resolu Of 1 894 tion the City Council , in January , , the records were deposited with the Society , and since then the volumes have been arranged by the librarian and then preserved by the Emery Record Preserving Company in Taunton , whenever appropriations have been made by the city, for this work . The Eme ry Silk process renders the damaged records ac cessible and insures them from future deterioration . It of consists preserving each leaf or document, between sheets Of transparent silk , which leaves the writing as clear as before , and even clearer after exposure to the light and air . New margins of inlaid paper which protect the wri ting at the 5 edges of the original leaves help also to make a strong i bind ng . Since the Newport records have been deposited with the Historical Society , many volumes have been arranged , pre v ser ed and indexed . Hundreds of visitors have examined them , and many letters have been received and answered concerning them . They are always carefully guarded , and are placed in the vault especially erected for them , when not in use . All who appreciate the charm and interest of these Old papers are cordially invited to see them while they are in the d custo y of the Society .
