This has been acquired principally by donation from persons involved in the field of Japanese studies. Although there are few rare items in the collection, it docs contain examples from a wide cross-section of Edo period printing and publishing. It has been our aim in the compilation of this catalogue to formulate a system for cataloguing antiquarian Japanese books, and to provide notes on commonplace works, which, nevertheless, have their importance, but which have been largely overlooked by Japanese bibliographers. It is hoped that the methods we have used may prove of assistance to others undertaking a similar task. The prints in the possession of the Library come mainly from the collections of Lord Harlech, formerly Chairman of the Governing Body, and Mr Frederick Anderson, with some later additions. The best part of the collection comprises portraits of actors by three artists of the Katsukawa School, namely Shunei, Shunko and Shunsho, and, of these, the works of Shunsho constitute a very important section. An interesting aspect of the collection is that it contains not only works of outstanding merit, but also more ordinary examples of the art. In the catalogue no attempt has been made to distinguish between these; the sole purpose being to indicate what the Library holdings arc without providing any critical notes. Our thanks are due to Professor C. J. Dunn for his help, and also to the Publica tions Committee of the School of Oriental and African Studies for making the publication of this work possible. Notes: This work was first published in Kaei 3 [1850], but this undated edition probably belongs to the late 1850s. It is a typically licentious sharebon, parodying in its title and contents the famous encyclopedia, the Wakan sansai zue (see no. 256). There is a preface dated Bunsei 4 [1821], and the work is divided into two hen, each of three maki, the first written and illustrated by Kanenari and the second illustrated by Kanenari, but written by Genka Joshi. Binding: FT, with grey-blue covers. Notes: An undated and unsigned manuscript of the anonymous Nanboku-cho period novel which was written sometime between 1336 and 1392. Although there were several movable type editions published between 1596 and 1624, the first block printed edition was not published until 1642. There is a copy of that edition in the British Museum. The last printed edition of the text before the modern period was that of Shotoku 6 [1716], suggesting that copies would have been hard to come by in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Several manuscript versions survive and this one was probably written in the early nineteenth century. The plot of the novel is set in the time of the Emperor Gohorikawa ( 1221-32) and concerns the tragic affair between the priest Sensai and the son of the Minister 2 TITLE CATALOGUE (BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS) of the Left, 1\1 inamoto Arihito, against the background of the struggle between the temples of I licizan and Mii-dcra. One of Bakin's most famous yomihon novels, based on the life of the famous, perhaps legendary, Kamakura period warrior, Aoto Fujitsuna.
