Hato Anaru o Te Parehua Founded 1840 ORDER OF SERVICE 2 July 2017 Pentecost 4 ‘just a cup of water’ WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE Wherever you are on your faith's journey, wherever you have come from and wherever you are going to, whatever you believe, whatever you do not believe, you are welcome here. Please join in the congregational responses printed in bold italics. Please stand if you are able, for the hymns and the offering prayer. We often sing the hymns without announcement. To use the loop system in the church, turn your hearing aids on to the appropriate setting. Printed copies of the reflection are available at the back of the church for people with extreme hearing loss. For others they can be picked up at the end of the Gathering. Please note your nearest fire exit. The church and hall have been earthquake strengthened. In an earthquake: drop, cover and hold. GATHERING The seasons turn, we trust ‘spring follows winter’ We begin to move now from shortest day to longest; Winter or summer, our world has needs asking to be met However long the day, compassion is always required; We ponder today where ‘just a cup of water’ will make a difference, Where more than water is needed, and if it is we who must respond. PROCESSIONAL HYMN AA 113 ‘Our life has its seasons’ Words: © Shirley Murray. Music: © Colin Gibson Our life has its seasons, and God has the reasons why spring follows winter, and new leaves grow, for there's a connection with our resurrection that flowers will bud after frost and snow. So there's never a time to stop believing, there's never a time for hope to die, there's never a time to stop loving, these three things go on. There's a time to be planting, a time to be plucking, a time to be laughing, a time to weep, a time to be building, a time to be breaking, a time to be waking, a time to sleep. So there’s never… There's a time to be hurting, a time to be healing, a time to be saving, a time to spend, a time to be grieving, a time to be dancing, a time for beginning, a time to end. So there’s never… WELCOME Kia ora tatou. Kia ora. PRAYER AND JESUS’ PRAYER Jim Cotter paraphrase on card LIGHTING THE RAINBOW CANDLE TIME WITH THE CHILDREN Mike Wespel-Rose HYMN (music on separate sheet) AA 109 ‘O the Spirit she moves on the water’ Words © Cecily Sheehy Music Cecily Sheehy arr. Jenny Bennett O the Spirit she moves on the water, and her breathing is felt far and near, O the Spirit she gave us a birth and a life. Do you see, do you hear? And she sweeps us all up in the flame of her love, she is here! La la la …. O the Spirit she’s dark and she’s brooding, unpredictable, wild without fear, She can roar with the power of a hurricane wind. Do you see, do you hear? And her silence becomes so profound we forget she is there. La la la …. O the Spirit, the great liberator, living energy, given to all Till at last we surrender our life to her – and we hear and we see: Being one with creation and life and the Spirit are we. La la la…. BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand) We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions and have fun together. We bless you. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.” Or, simply saying ‘Hello” is a good idea. Also feel free to simply observe if you wish! THE WORD IN TEXTS Heather Macfarlane Hebrew Bible Psalm 13: 1-5 Gospel Matthew 10: 40-42 Contemporary reading ‘This table’ from Sounding the Seasons By Malcolm Guite The centuries have settled on this table deepened the grain beneath a clean white cloth which bears afresh our changing elements. Year after year of prayer, in hope and trouble, were poured out here and blessed and broken, both in aching absence and in absent presence. This table too the earth herself has given and human hands have made. Where candle-flame at corners burns and turns the air to light the oak once held its branches up to heaven, blessing the elements which it became, rooting the dew and rain, branching the light. Because another tree can bear, unbearable, for us, the weight of Love, so can this table RESPONSE For the Word in scripture, for the Word among us, for the Word within us, we give thanks REFLECTION ‘just a cup of water’ Susan Jones LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY OF ST ANDREW’S People share notices and visitors are welcomed. HYMN (sung seated, music on separate sheet) AA 83 ‘Just a cup of water’ Words and Music: © 1986 Felicia Edgecumbe Just a cup of water in his name Jesus said will honour him, may need your love, Lord, make us see and help us live in true charity “Love your neighbour as you love yourself” Jesus words come to us and they will not go away. Jesus had compassion and touched the lives of all those whose needs he saw: Many need your help, Lord, make us care and use us freely, your gifts to share. “Love your neighbour…” COMMISSIONING COMMUNION LITURGY AND COMMUNION HYMN on card FINAL HYMN ‘And did those feet in former times’ Words: © Susan Jones 2000: this version 2014 Tune: CH 4 #106 Jerusalem And did those feet in former times walk upon scree and tussock brown and did the man, Jesus the Christ cross mountains high and rolling downs? and did he know the morning mist? and did he know the harbour’s sheen? and did he love this cityscape its terraced streets, the urban scene? And does he still walk this our land, talking and laughing with us yet? And does he know that stab of need when all our other friends forget? And is he there when wine is poured? And is he there when bread’s prepared? And does he laugh when life’s alright? And does he weep when it is not? Be with us Christ, as we step out. Come with us on our lifelong quest. Be our true guide, on our right hand, be with us, walking and at rest. So we will know life to the full, be there to see us through the night. For we would be your followers pursue your Way with all our might.
