Walk Around The tourists can take a leisurely stroll along Chowringhee Road to unravel the rare beauty of this city. On one side of the road is a huge, lush green, open park called the Maidan, centering around Fort William. The fort is still in use and retains its well guarded grandeur. There’s the grand Victoria Memorial at the southern fringe of Maidan, which houses an exquisite collection of art objects and paintings. Marble Palace This exquisite art gallery was built in the year 1835 by Rajendra Mallick, The major highlight includes the Reuben's masterpieces, original paintings of Rembrandt, Reynolds and Van Goyen etc. Nearly a hundred types of marble from all corners of the globe have been brought to the Asian site and used throughout the interior of the building. Missionaries of Charity Home to the tomb of the adored Mother Theresa, the Missionaries of Charity convent still stands on its original site dating back to 1950 when the order first vowed to ‘give whole-hearted and free service to the poorest of the poor’. Calcutta Nicco Park, Situated at Salt Lake, is an amazing amusement park. It can be said about the Nicco Park of Kolkata, India that, it is like the Disneyland of West Bengal with lots of wonderful games and rides. Its most recent addition is the Cave ride that is very interesting and adventurous. It is a spacious park covering about 40-acre land. Dakshineswar Temple The temple is located across the river from Belur Math. The central shrine in the temple complex is dedicated to the goddess Kali. Twelve temples of Lord Shiva form the remainder of the complex. Both Belur Math and Dakshineshwar are a good drive away from Calcutta, and great places to soak in the spiritual heritage of Bengal. Timings: 6.30 am-noon, 3.30 pm-9 pm, Daily Botannical Garden Located in a quiet space 20kms outside Kolkata, this is an ideal place for a tranquil day out of the city. The gardens contain over 30,000 types of plants and trees and the most striking feature is the 250-year- old Banyan tree, the largest in the world. Tagore House Once home of one of India’s greatest national heroes - a man who brought his beloved country to the eyes of the world and the first Nobel Prize winner to hail from Asia, Rabindranath Tagore - this house is today a centre for traditional dance, drama music, museum and university of arts St Paul’s Cathedral St Paul’s was the first cathedral to be built in India and was constructed in a curious yet striking Indo-Gothic style. The stained-glass windows are the only ones that can be found in the city, while mosaics, murals and European-inspired frescoes add to the unique charm of the cathedral. .
