The Gruys Journal (GJ), Volume 12, November 2007, ISSN: 1387-9979; GJ07.PDF The Gruys Journal is a private periodical on Gruys-families. It started in 1996 with volume 1 as updating journal for the Album, "Born to be Special" (1995). In 1998 by letter from the Dutch Royal Library it received an ISSN number: 1387-9979. It functions as a genealogical journal for Gruys families. Its primary storage places are personal libraries of some Gruyses and the library of Granite Mountain, Salt Lake City, Utah. The contents regard major data on family members sent to the redaction. New volumes will be prepared only once a year and when people supplied enough new data to fill a volume. To reduce costs from each new volume an electronic version will be prepared. That can be obtained by e-mail on request or downloaded form a website. Photographs received, will not automatically become included in a new volume of the journal. They may be stored in the family archive of the editor. Anyhow, please write with a soft pencil at the back-side which persons can be observed and the year the picture was made. Electronic versions can be sent. The Gruys tribe originates from The Netherlands (Holland) and members of different branches still live in that beautiful country with its lovely mild, but sometimes wet, climate. The first Gruyses lived in the neighbourhood of the city of Delft, at the Zaan banks north of Amsterdam and in the city of Groningen and its province. Some families can be found immediately east of the latter area, in Germany (Ost Friesland). The Gruys Journal is an independent periodical printed for a very limited number of addresses. Copies may be obtained after payment of costs of printing and postage as long as they are available. People with e-mail may receive the electronic versions as far as available, free of charge. The first volume of the Album, Born to be Special, and the 1900-2000 century volumes of the Gruys Journal are no longer available. Just like said in the preface of the Album, most data are hard to prove and thus should not be seen with a strong belief of exactness. We try to give the most reliable data, but errors are never totally to be excluded. They consist of data errors and typing errors. Please contact the redaction about errors found. Your comments then may become included in a next volume. The contents belong to the copyright of the editor, but editor and redaction do not accept responsibilities for any part of the contents. Advertisements may be included on request. Editor and redaction: Erik Gruys, Vijverlaan 9, NL-3971-HJ Driebergen, The Netherlands. One simple explanation is the increasing amount of data to be found on the internet, another may be the limited value of those data. About Christmas story mentioned for the FVE by Jan Vaarten (2006) About this time we celebrate Christmas, the birth of new life and the beginning of a new year, the time-period defined by the length of a circle of the earth around the sun. The moment to start counting the first circle and thus a next one is rather arbitrarily. Different populations around the world follow different numbering systems and take different moments to begin the year. For many centuries, at least in the Mediterranean regions the beginning of a new year has been celebrated around what we now call March, evidently the beginning of springtime 2 Journal on Gruys families. The Gruys Journal (GJ), Volume 12, November 2007, ISSN: 1387-9979; GJ07.PDF when nature comes to life again. The names of the months September (7th), October (8th), November (9th) and December (10th) still remind us of this system. In the Roman empire and during the time of Julius Caesar, it was decided to connect the beginning of a year with the moment in which on the northern hemisphere the sun starts to rise again. This system presently still is used in Western European countries and their spin off countries, whereas f.i. most Muslim countries and Ethiopia have their New Year more near March. The celebration of a new year is often surrounded with traditions and old customs. They take us back to the ancient times when people felt their lives much more dependent on their interaction with nature, something that we, in our modern world of technological achievements, sometimes forget. A comparable situation might occur in our relations with animals. We sometimes seem to forget about their background, their qualities and their needs; for example we might treat them like children feeding them chocolates or, to the opposite, treat them as if they were only technical instruments for the production of commercial goods. Hopefully you will have a very nice Christmas time, time to enjoy with your relatives and friends and time to relax. And maybe, when you are sitting next to the tree, listening to pleasant music, enjoying your traditional dishes, you might find some time to reflect upon our relations with animals and have some thoughts on how to keep them well. A. LETTERS Christmas card of Rogier Gruys and family from Canada #1. Of wellicht allemaal. Letter, 3-1, 2007, of Peter Gruys (Lavardens, France) on advertisement of the ‘Fondation Généalogie et Blason’ # 3. Eilene Gruys Van: "Eilene Gruys Aan: "Gruys" Onderwerp: Re: wish you good days Datum: maandag 25 december 2006 18:53 Datum: donderdag 28 december 2006 2:00 AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES 1 When choking on an ice cube, simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat. Presto! The blockage will instantly remove itself. 2. Avoid cutting yourself slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold while you chop. 3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink. 4. To treat high blood pressure: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer. 5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button. 6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you will be afraid to cough.
