Just like any other item on the shelf; cricket sets, basketballs, skipping ropes and tennis racquets can be borrowed from the Library for up to four weeks. Library officer, Jeremiah Sloane said the equipment is great for those who don’t own, or can’t afford sporting equipment of their own. “Tennis racquets and cricket sets can be quite expensive, so it’s great for families and friends to hire them instead”. The equipment has been available since the opening of the library, and has slowly accumulated over time. “We have bought some extra gear in recently, including some really good quality tennis racquets,” Mr Sloane said. “It’s a lot more popular in summer, however we have just moved it into the middle of the library so more people who come realise it is here.” Mr Sloane said that although people don’t normally associate libraries with sport, they now could. “One of our library officers, Ray, brings the school kids in for story telling and they talk about what they can hire… you know the books and the DVDs, but when the kids find out they can hire the sports equipment it creates such an excitement.” The Lerderderg Library is located at 215 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. For more information on the equipment hire, Cooper from Darley visited the library during the school holidays and inspected the sporting equipment that can be hired.
