Lilting Banshees Provide Comic Relief to Kick off New Semester. ince 1834, Wake Forest University has been an institution where aca- FROM Sdemics stimulate and challenge the student body. Since 1993, the Lilting Banshees have been there to relieve the stress. The comedy troupe held its second performance of the school year on January 25th in a packed Brendle Recital Hall to kick off the Spring semester with a laugh. Performing in front of a sold out crowd at both 8 and 10 o' clock, the Banshees provided a pleas- the ant satire about life at Wake Forest. The group covered everything from the Old Gold and Black to Greek life. With crazy dance moves and witty musical numbers, the Banshees made everyone in the crowd leave with a smile on their face that made facing the looming pile of homework awaiting just a FOREST little easier. -Michael England Wake Downtown Changes the Game for STEM Newest Addition to Wake Forest Takes Shape in the Middle of Winston-Salem. s more trees continue to grow in the Forest, the University recently opened Wake Downtown and the Inno- Avation Quarter in January 2017. Hosting nearly 300 undergraduate students and 18 undergraduate courses, classes began on January 10th. The facilility is composed of refurbished factories and warehouses once owned by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and sits right next to the Bowman-Gray Campus of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Wake Downtown and its Innovation Corner provide students taking classes there with state- of-the-art technology, focusing on STEM-majors: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. -Tyler Primm Miller The Heartbreaking Defeat Demon Deacons Fall to Duke in Last-minute Shot. h, Demon Deacons! Ah, humanity! It happened again. The Demon Deacons were vanquished once again by Athe-team-from-the-east, Duke. On Saturday, January 28th, Duke rallied against Wake in the final minutes of the game to beat the Deacs for the fifth consecutive time. The much anticipated rivalry matchup drew a lively crowd that packed the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to its full capacity. All was going well for Wake Forest until the final seconds when Duke’s Luke Kennard hit a 3-pointer with only 7 seconds left to allow the Blue Devils to surpass the Deacons. The disappointing final score of 85-83 drove most of the crowd away with their mouths open. Just another story in the epic saga that is the Demon Deacon vs. Blue Devil rivalry. -Michael England Tyler Primm Miller is a freshman from Michael England is a freshman from War- Thomasville, NC, planning on studying rington, PA, planning on studying Politics and both History and Philosophy. Hooray!” for a new president?? #MAGA 2. Burger Batch: I personally have not been, but I have seen many a snapchat stories and Instagram posts of the decadent and highly caloric milkshakes from 237 W 5th St. 3. New Batch of Pledge drivers: As pledge drivers made the previous Yays’ column, the new crop simply had to. Who doesn’t love baby pledges? 4. 2017: I think everyone is thrilled with the conclusion of 2016 and all the drama it held. Cheers to the new year and hoping it is not a repeat of 2016. 5. "Split": 23 split personalities, one man, three abducted girls. This recipe satisfies both the horror film fanatic and mind-thriller junkie. I recommend to all to see this movie. 6. WFU’s Birthday: Happy 183rd Birthday to Mother so Dear! Here’s to another 183 more. 7. Maya Angelou: Raving reviews have been given to the newest dormitory, minus some occasional plumbing problems. Way to go Wake for building another dorm! 8. Spring Concert: It has finally been announced! Rae Sremmurd will be gracing Wake with his pres- ence on March 25th. #BlackBeatles 9. Banshees: Never failing to make their audience laugh, the comedy group put on another entertaining performance showcasing the best of the best skits. Nays 1. Women’s March: I am all for protesting when people feel it necessary, however how it is acceptable that the Women’s March excluded women who are Pro-life from walking with them? Seems a bit hypocritical to me. 2. “Alternative Facts”: This was not a shining moment for the new Trump Administration. Even devot- ed conservatives must admit this occurrence as a foot-in-the-mouth episode.
