General Characteristics of the District 1.1. Location & Geographical Area Thiruvananthapuram district is situated between north latitudes 8º 17' and 8º 54' and east longitudes 76º 41' and 77º 17'. The southernmost extremity, 'Parasala', is 56 kms away from Kanyakumari, the "land's end of India". The district stretches along the shores of the Arabian Sea for a distance of 78 kms. 1.2. Topography The district can be divided in to three geographical regions, Highlands, Midlands, and Lowlands. Chirayinkeezhu, and Thiruvananthapuram Taluks lie on the midland and lowland regions, while the Nedumangad Taluk lies in the midland and highland regions, and the Neyyattinkara Taluk stretches over all the three regions. 1.3. Forest Thiruvananthapuram district has a reserve forest area of 495.145 sq. kms and vested forest area of 3.534 sq. kms spreading over three ranges, viz., the Kulathupuzha range in the north, Palode range in the middle and the Paruthipalli range in the South. 1.5. Administrative Set Up There are two systems of administrative set up in the district – revenue and local self Government. Under the revenue system the district is divided into Revenue division, Taluks and Villages. Under the local administrative set up, the district is divided into statutory towns and panchayats.
