Executive Summary The desktop Palaeontological Impact Assessment for the area for the proposed Bulk Water Transfer System between the existing Donkerpoort Dam to the Donkerpoort Water Treatment Works, to the Bosveldsig Water storage and Reservoir in town, Modimolle, Limpopo Province, has been completed. The rocks in the area are sandstones of the Alma and Swaerskraal Formations (Nylstroom Subgroup, Waterberg Group) which are between 2000 – 1700 million years old so too old for body fossils. There is an extremely small chance that fossils of the distant (approx. 15km) away) Irrigasie Formation (Permo-Triassic) could be discovered when excavations or drilling commences so a Chance Find protocol and monitoring programme has been added to the report. It is concluded that the project may continue as far as the palaeontology is concerned. Palaeontological Impact Assessment for the proposed Bulk water transfer system, Modimolle Local Municipality, Limpopo Province. 1. Background A desktop (or phase 1) palaeontological impact assessment is required by SAHRA for the proposed project as the area shows green on the SAHRIS palaeosensitivity map. Green Vision Consulting (Pty) Ltd have been appointed by the Modimolle Local Municipality of the Limpopo Province to conduct a Basic Assessment for the proposed Bulk Water Transfer System between the existing Donkerpoort Dam to the Donkerpoort Water Treatment Works, to the Bosveldsig Water storage and Reservoir in town, as outlined in the Draft Basic Assessment report. The Draft BAr was compiled in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, Act 108 of 1998 (NEMA) and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations of December 2014. The Heritage Impact assessment has been done by NGT Consulting (Pty) Ltd but the palaeontological impact assessment must be done, as noted by SAHRA (27 February 2017.) This report complies with the requirements of the NEMA and environmental impact assessment (EIA) regulations (GNR 982 of 2014). The table below provides a summary of the requirements, with cross references to the report sections where these requirements have been addressed. Methods and Terms of Reference 1. In order to determine the likelihood of fossils occurring in the affected area geological maps, literature, palaeontological databases and published and unpublished records must be consulted. 2. If fossils are likely to occur then a site visit must be made by a qualified palaeontologist to locate and assess the fossils and their importance. 3. Unique or rare fossils should either be collected (with the relevant South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) permit) and removed to a suitable storage and curation facility, for example a Museum or University palaeontology department or protected on site. 4. Common fossils can be sacrificed if they are of minimal or no scientific importance but a representative collection could be made if deemed necessary. The published geological and palaeontological literature, unpublished records of fossil sites, catalogues and reports housed in the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, and SAHRA databases were consulted to determine if there are any records of fossils from the sites and the likelihood of any fossils occurring there. 3. Consultation Process No consultations were carried out during the desktop study. Apart from reviewing interested and/or affected party (IAP) comments received by the EIA consultant during the EIA process, no other consultation took place as part of the paleontological study. Geology and Palaeontology Geology The town of Modimolle, (previously Nylstroom), is situated on the sandstones of the Alma Formation, Nylstroom Subgroup, Waterberg Group. These sediments are medium to coarse- grained arkoses, lithic arkoses, feldspatic arenites, subarkoses and litharenites and are interpreted as having been deposited as a series of alluvial fans, forming a bajada (series of coalescing alluvial fans along a mountain front) along the scarp formed by an uplifted block on the south side of the Murchison strike-slip fault zone (Barker et al., 2006).
