DISTRICT PROFILE DISTRICT PROFILE Tiruvarur District was formed in January 1997 by reorganizing Nagapattinam District and Thanjavur district. 9 blocks were carved out from Nagapattinam District and 1 block was taken from Thanjavur District to form Tiruvarur district comprising 10 blocks. Continued… Tiruvarur district is situated between 10 20*&11 07*N-S latitude and between 79 13*&79 45*E-W of longitude covering areas 2374 sq.km in India. Height, above MSL is 10 meters. Tiruvarur is one of the important district in the Delta Region. The district is bounded on the eastern side by Nagappattinam District and Puduchery U.T (Karaiakal) and western side by Thanjavur district and to Northern side Thanajavur and Nagapattinam Districts and in Southern side covered by small portion of coastal line of Palk strait mostly protected by Mangroves forest. This district is being traversed by the number of major rivers which are mostly habitations of Cauvery. Among the river system Koraiyar head is an important location were the rivers Paminiyar, Vennar and Vettar branches out to different parts of the district. This district is predominantly an agricultural oriented on and ends mostly on Cauvery water. Tiruvarur district is a compact district with all the taluks and block head quarters well connected with Tiruvarur. It has 7 Taluks and 10 Blocks. There are namely as follows S. S. Above average rains were received during 2004 (906mm), 2008 (1136.90mm), 2010 (1123.9mm), 2015 (1015.9 mm) Though the Rainfall was lower than the normal in October, the Same has been Compensated with more rains, during November & December in 1998, 2009 and to an extent in 2015. Abnormal downpour was experienced during November 2015 (577.9m.m.), Nov-2008 (734.25 m.m.), Nov 2009, (508.23m.m.), Nov 2010 (547.84 m.m.), Oct 2012(531.78 m.m.). 3. VULNERABLE AREAS VULNERABLE CRITERIA 1. Very Highly Vulnerable: An area can be classified as Highly Vulnerable, if any of the following criteria is satisfied. Inundation of water and water level was more than 5 feet due to heavy rains or discharge from water bodies. Rescue operations carried out with the help of CDRF/TNDRF. Areas which are cut off and became inaccessible for undertaking rescue and relief operations. Loss of lives or large scale evacuation carried out. VULNERABLE CRITERIA 2 High Vulnerable: An area can be classified as Vulnerable, if any of the following criteria is satisfied. Inundation of water and water level was 3-5 feet. Rescue operations carried out only by the Local Police or Fire Services and Local Community . 3 Medium Vulnerable: An area can be classified as Moderately Vulnerable if Inundation of Water & Water level was 2-3 feet. 4 Low Vulnerable: An area can be classified as Less Vulnerable, if stagnation of water was below 2 feet.
