Elections are held on the day fixed by section 43 of the Local Government Act 1972 which shall be the first Thursday in May unless some other day is fixed by the Home Secretary. In 1976, the Home Secretary made an Order under the Local Government Act 1972 providing for elections at four-yearly intervals. Previously, since 1964, elections had been held every three years.
