Media Release Date: 05.08.2003 Communiqué aux médias No. 102 Medien-Mitteilung Nominees for UEFA awards announced Winners to be honoured at UEFA Football Gala in Monaco on 28 August UEFA has revealed the identities of the nominees for the five annual awards, based on performances during last season’s UEFA club competitions, which will be presented during the UEFA Football Gala to be held in Monaco on Thursday 28 August. The candidates in the five categories are (in alphabetical order): Best Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus Football Club) Iker Casillas (Real Madrid CF) Francesco Toldo (Internazionale FC) Best Defender Cristian Chivu (AFC Ajax) Paolo Maldini (AC Milan) Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan) Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid CF) Lilian Thuram (Juventus Football Club) Best Midfielder Edgar Davids (Juventus Football Club) Claude Makelele (Real Madrid CF) Pavel Nedved (Juventus Football Club) Paul Scholes (Manchester United FC) Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid CF) Best Forward Raúl González (Real Madrid CF) Ronaldo (Real Madrid CF) Andriy Shevchenko (AC Milan) Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United FC) Christian Vieri (Internazionale FC) Most Valuable Player Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus Football Club) Pavel Nedved (Juventus Football Club) Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid CF) Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United FC) Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid CF) page 2 Last year’s UEFA award winners were, in the order displayed above, Oliver Kahn, Roberto Carlos, Michael Ballack, Raúl González and Zinedine Zidane. The nominees have been chosen by UEFA’s Technical Study Group and the readers of UEFA’s official website, uefa.com. The Technical Study Group consists of Sir Alex Ferguson, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Gérard Houllier, Marcello Lippi, Rinus Michels, Giovanni Trapattoni, Jozef Venglos, Arsène Wenger and UEFA’s Technical Director, Andy Roxburgh. Each member of the Technical Study Group and the uefa.com readers – as a team – could nominate up to six candidates in each category. Every player who obtained a vote earned one point. This means that a player could earn up to a maximum of ten points. The players who appeared most frequently on the lists of candidates have therefore been nominated.
