Engheadlineineer a(font: Ballo thunderon-Powered pants) Race Car Grade Level: Elementary Worksheet Build and Decorate Use the provided materials to build an air-powered moving model race car: • Cardboard • Wheels (wooden) • Dowel (wooden sticks) • Straws (various sizes) • Balloon • Tape • Scissors • Crayons and markers Race 1. Cut one of the straws in half. 2. Tape each half of the straw on the cardboard body of the car. 3. Insert the dowel through the straw. 4. Push the wheels on. If your wheels are loose, use a small piece of tape to create a lug nut to hold wheel on. The lug nut is created by bending tape over the dowel on outside of wheel (away from the body.) Do not place tape over the end of the dowel and wheel. 5. Flip car over. 6. Cut off the ring/lip of the balloon. headline (font: thunder pants) 7. Insert the remaining straw into the balloon. 8. Tape the balloon and straw together at the cut. Make a tight seal between the straw and balloon. 9. Tape the balloon/straw combo on top of the car. Position the balloon in the middle of the cardboard body for best distance. Do not have balloon hanging off the body of the car. 10. Color car, if desired. 11. Blow through the straw to inflate the balloon. 12. Pinch off straw and bend to place car wheels on ground. Release the pinched straw, allowing the car to move. *** Hint *** Cars have axles. The wheels are tight to fit the dowel, but it is the dowel that turns the wheels versus just the wheels themselves. Remember car wheels do not independently move. Race • Create a start and finish line 20 to 30 feet apart. Place cars (with inflated balloons) at start line then release. • Measure the distance traveled to determine a winner. .
