Upper Rurst Platts John, farmer, Hurst OWLERTON is a large village in the vale of the Don, 2 miles N.N.W. of Sheffield, partly in Nether HalIam township, and partly in Ecclesfield parish. Being below the confluence of the Rivelin and Loxley rivuletB, it suffered severely from the great flood of 1864 (see Sheffield). The CHURCH (St. John the Baptist) was built by the vicar of St. Philip's, Sheffield, in 1874, as a chapel of ease to that parish, partly with money left for the purpose of church extension in St. Philip's parish by the late Miss Rawson. On the application of the present vicar of St. Philip's, a separate district has been assigned to the church by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who have endowed the living with £200 a year. The church consists of nave, aisles, chancel, and tower with bell, and contains 500 sitting-so The cost, including the boundary wall, and church furniture, &c., amounted to nearly £3600. The Rev. H. A. Goodwin, B.A., who had been curate-in-charge, on the nomination of the vicar of the parish, has been appointed to the incum, hency.
