helping children, parents and couples cope with separation and divorce Carol Bellamy The Children’s Voice in Law: A Conversation with Carol Bellamy and Colleagues, Presented by FamilyKind, Hosted by LexisNexis, January 15, 2014, 8:30 – 10 am Carol Bellamy, the first woman elected to citywide office in New York City, presided as New York City Council President for eight years. In that role she championed the rights of children and families. She was particularly effective regarding the thousands of children in foster care by implementing a comprehensive monitoring system; spearheading the efforts to end the warehousing of youth in large facilities and mandating oversight of the performance of foster care agencies. She also developed and actualized programs to assure the immunization of children before they entered the school system thus eliminating many serious childhood diseases. She used the bully pulpit of the Council President’s Office to call attention to deficits in city services and to assure remedies. After leaving City office, Ms. Bellamy was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the Director of the Peace Corps becoming the first returned Peace Corps volunteer to serve in that position. Subsequently she served as Executive Director of UNICEF (the UN Children’s Agency) for ten years. She was also a member of the New York State Board of Regents and presently chairs the International Baccalaureate's Board of Governors. Ms. Bellamy continues to dedicate herself to promoting human rights, educational opportunities and the well-being of children around the world and in New York City. She has been named by Forbes Magazine as one of the “100 Most Powerful Women in the World,” and was a fellow of the Harvard Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. FamilyKind is honored to be recognized by Carol Bellamy as she continues her work on behalf of children and families. To learn more about this event and to register, visit FamilyKind.org/news-events.
