This backup method requires from the backup application an individual interface for each application it backs up. To address the growing number of applications and their specific interfaces, a new coordinator between the actors of the backup and restore process was introduced on Microsoft Windows systems — the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service. Data Protector integrates with the Volume Shadow Copy service through the Data Protector Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service integration (VSS integration). The Data Protector integration with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service can serve in two functions: l It provides support for certified VSS writers .
