FLAMMABILITY Flammability is a Regulatory requirement for all Adult and Children’s Clothing (Textiles) including scarves and wraps for the US. Canada requires that all textile products meet Canadian flammability requirements. Failure to meet flammability requirements can result in criminal and civil penalties and/or Recalls. FOLLOWING IS A GUIDELINE FOR SOME OF THE HIGH RISK FABRICS FOR FLAMMABILITY Chart is based on NPG historical data, known risk and/or recalls REGULATION‐ 16 CFR 1610 FABRIC TYPE – HIGHEST RISK MEDIUM RISK‐ Test in LOWER RISK Flammability of Clothing Textiles Raised Surface fabrics DO NOT USE development Raised Surface fabrics‐ Includes Fleece (brushed French 100% Cotton 80% Cotton 20% Polyester & 60% Cotton 40% Polyester Flocked Pile, Nap (brushed or cut) Terry) Rayon contains polyester in the loop or Tufted surfaces Rayon Cotton Blends (brushed) yarn to decrease risk Faux Fur 100% Cotton 80% Cotton 20% Polyester & Flammability testing is required Rayon contains polyester in the pile except fabrics made of 1 or more of Rayon Cotton Blends yarn to decrease risk the following fibers are exempt from Flammability testing in the Sherpa 100% Cotton 80% Cotton 20% Polyester & USA. (Acrylic, Modacrylic, Nylon, Rayon Cotton Blends contains polyester in the pile Olefin, Polyester and Wool.) yarn to decrease risk Velvet 100% Rayon or 100% Silk Rayon or Silk blended with Testing is required for all fabrics for Polyester or Nylon Canada Flannel NA NA 100% Cotton Terry (cut pile) NA NA 100% Cotton Velour NA NA 100% Cotton Note: Flame retardants are not effective on raised fiber surface fabrics Plain Surfaces ‐ Includes fancy FABRIC TYPE – HIGHEST RISK MEDIUM RISK‐ Test in LOWER RISK woven, knitted or flock-printed Plain Surface fabrics DO NOT USE development surfaces Sheer fabrics ‐ made of 100% Rayon or Rayon Silk 100% Rayon or Rayon silk 88 gm/m2 or 20 Momme Silk, Rayon, Cotton, Linen Blends: less than 43 gm/m2 blends: 43‐88 gm/m2 or 2.6 oz/yd2 or heavier Flammability testing is required for 100% Silk: less than 52 100% Silk: 52‐88 gm/m2 fabric weights under 88 gm/m2 or gm/m2 20 Momme or 2.6 oz/yd2 100% Cotton or Linen ‐ very loose open weave (gauze Testing is required for all fabrics for fabrics) Canada Notes: 1. Fiber content, yarn twist and fabric construction are all variables for flammability characteristics. 2. This chart is not all inclusive and does not take into account any special finishing, color treatments, fabric wash, garment wash, chemical treatment or end use of the product. 3.
