This publication reflects our commitment to the highest degree of programmatic integrity and fiscal transparency. We’re funder, strategic planner, convener, and community steward — and our work is grounded in Jewish values. We’re dedicated to nurturing a network of nonprofits, supporting the range from grassroot start-ups to flagship service providers. The annual publication of this book is an important moment to celebrate our commitments and our ongoing relationships with the community-based nonprofits that share our vision for today and tomorrow. At our core, we are driven by our abiding mission to care for Jews everywhere and New Yorkers of all backgrounds, respond to crises close to home and far away, and shape our Jewish future in New York, in Israel, and in nearly 70 countries around the world. We are acutely aware that none of Introduction this would happen without our organizational partners. Our annual allocations reflect this mission and are an important indicator of how that mission is realized in the community. Each year, hundreds of volunteer leaders and professionals come together in the office and in the field to review ongoing and emergent needs and, in close relationship with front-line nonprofits, make funding decisions that lead us to achieve the greatest impact. We pursue systemic solutions that are long term and transformative, and we’re positioned to mobilize resources, activate networks, and strengthen organizations in order to help communities thrive. This requires us to stay both focused and flexible, intently maintaining successful strategies that achieve our goals and testing new models that pursue innovations. And, in times of crisis, we respond powerfully and nimbly to make a difference in real time. We’re committed to being deeply present in the neighborhoods and communities where people live, gather, and connect, and we represent a dynamic network that’s ready and responsive. We’re proud of our tradition of careful stewardship and investment of our donors’ dollars. UJA’s founders created a system that has not only stood the test of time, but also shaped the times. Today, the grants reflected in this book — individually and collectively — are shaping the future of our collective story. 2 What’s in This Book? WHAT WE DO — AND HOW WE DO IT We begin by organizing teams of volunteers and staff that represent the rich diversity of Jewish life. Together, we work from organizational priorities that determine the path for how and what we fund. We also listen to voices within our community — from nonprofit staff and academics to community members and the clients we help — to best understand how to make the greatest impact. In fiscal year 2019, UJA-Federation distributed $140,929,298. This includes $66,965,344 in general operating support to a network of 73 core partners and $73,963,954 in strategic, designated grants to longstanding institutions, grassroots organizations, synagogues, day schools, and other eligible nonprofit organizations. What’s in This Book? That’s how we change the lives of 4.5 million people a year. WHAT’S IN THIS BOOK? We divide our Report of Grants Awarded into three sections: 1. GRANTS BY ISSUE AREA We begin with a helpful overview and grant-making highlights from individual funding bodies. We include a full list of volunteer leaders and professional staff dedicated to our work. 2. GRANTS BY AGENCY — SUMMARY We summarize UJA-Federation funding to individual nonprofit partners or grantees. A chart reports the full funding amount that we’ve given any specific agency, including core operating dollars and any targeted grants. 3. GRANTS BY AGENCY — FULL LISTING We detail grants awarded to individual agencies, including a list of grants by name and the full funding amount. This listing offers the most complete representation of the work we fund. 3 JEWISH COMMUNAL NETWORK Overview UJA-Federation supports a network of 73 core partners and hundreds of nonprofits. Large and small, they are the heart of our collective power. This strong, sustainable, and connected ecosystem maximizes the impact of UJA’s mission and work on the ground. The Network Department combines core operating funding, supportive block grants, and targeted capacity building to develop organizational excellence, maximize working together, and ensure that our network of nonprofits highly aligns with our mission. Our funding and policy decisions are informed by data, and we carefully oversee and assess performance and management. PRIORITY 1: NETWORK PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE The Network Department is increasingly focused on analyzing the effectiveness of our network by Jewish Communal Network looking at it holistically, thinking of each funded organization as one part of an interdependent and complementary enterprise serving the Jewish and broader community of New York. We’re widening our scope and incorporating critical data and research coming from within UJA, as well as from outside sources including city and state government agencies, in order to identify opportunities to strengthen the network. That way, our network — and each organization within it — remains vital and prepared for the ever-shifting realities of our world. PRIORITY 2: PROVIDE GENERAL OPERATING SUPPORT In collaboration with UJA’s Impact and Performance Assessment Department (IPAD), we’re designing new methodology to determine appropriate levels of general operating support for partner agencies. We’re drawing on lessons learned from past UJA allocation processes, and on best practices in the broader philanthropic community. The new methodology will be piloted during the FY21 allocations process and will take a variety of factors into consideration, including UJA priorities, organizational effectiveness, and community need. PRIORITY 3: CAPACITY BUILDING & IMPACT INVESTMENT Together with its planning partners across Community Planning and Agency Resources (CPAR), Network will evaluate the most strategic use of funding for particular sectors or clusters of agencies. Among the work currently underway is a deep dive into CUNY Hillels to help
