SPECIALIST NETBALL Cricket Music Netball Tennis PROGRAM Approved by the Department of Education. Develop your netball skills while at John Forrest Secondary College Students in the John Forrest Specialist Netball Program pursue their love of netball with the assistance of professional, accredited teachers and coaches. The program offers fantastic opportunities including intrastate and interstate tournaments and competitions, as well as local competitions and matchplay. Students build their fundamental skills and understanding of netball through Years 7 to 10 (see course details below) and can pursue clear and established educational and workplace pathways in our senior school and beyond. All staff and students are involved in Netball WA netball as either a player, coach and/or umpire. The first Year 8 group of Specialist Netball students enrolled at John Forrest in July 1999 and since that time the program has evolved into a highly respected and successful netball program producing players who have gone on to play State League. In 2020 we welcome over 100 netball students across Years 7 to 12. Specialist Sport Program students have a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills and self-discipline. Students are expected to maintain a high level of achievement not only in their chosen sport but all learning areas and are expected to participate in the wider College community. COURSE DESCRIPTION In lower school students study with highly qualified teachers and receive professional coaching. The course is affiliated with Netball WA and covers the development of netball skills and strategies, fitness training and testing as set out by the Netball Australia curriculum. Students also study the history of netball, diet and nutrition, sports medicine awareness, umpiring, including player’s exam, video game analysis (class, state league and national league teams), player and team psychology (goal setting and team building), and equipment and shoe technology. Students are involved in matchplay, interclass carnivals, specialist netball school carnivals, School Sports WA Champion Schools Tournament, Interschool competitions and regional carnivals. In senior school students may progress their Specialist Sport toward University and Training WA entry and work in the sporting industry (eg health and physical education teacher, exercise physiology, sports science, sports development officer, sports promoter, sport coach). IMPORTANT INFORMATION We are proud to offer students the opportunity to pursue their individual interests and strengths through participation in one of our four Specialist Programs. The Specialist Programs are timetabled as electives. Queries about the impact of this on student course selection may be discussed with the Deputy Principal. OUTSTANDING RESULTS AT JOHN FORREST Since becoming an Independent Public School, John Forrest has achieved some outstanding results including: University pathway students achieving consistently high median ATAR scores; with 100% receiving an offer of placement. John Forrest Secondary College students have been awarded scholarships from the University of Western Australia, Curtin University and Edith Cowan University for each of the last nine years. In 2019, two students joined the “99 club” for achieving an ATAR over 99. One student was awarded a Subject Certificate of Excellence which places them in the top 0.5% of candidates in ATAR Examinations. Five students were awarded a Certificate of Distinction for achieving over 190 out of a possible 200 points. Five students were awarded a Certificate of Merit for achieving over 150 out of a possible 200 points. (Points are awarded on the basis of degree of difficulty of the courses/programs undertaken and the results of the student. For example, a student achieving an ‘A’ Grade in a General Course would receive 8 points or 10 points if they achieved an ‘A’ Grade in an ATAR Course.) In 2019, Year 12 students completed 170 Certificate II or higher qualifications. SPECIALIST NETBALL ACHIEVEMENTS Always in final stage of SSWA Schools Tournament. Regularly win NERPEA Regional Carnivals. Consistently in top four in minor carnivals. INTER STATE COMPETITION, CAMPS MATCHPLAY AND COMPETITIONS Since 2003 the John Forrest Specialist Netball Program teams have travelled each year to the Brisbane Gold Coast to play in the World Sport Gold Coast Netball Carnival and all netball students have the opportunity of being part of this exciting competition. The tournament involves teams from Australia and New Zealand. WA competitions and carnivals include: NERPEA Regional Carnivals. Specialist Schools Netball Carnivals. WA School Sports (Champion Schools Tournament). QUALIFIED STAFF The John Forrest Specialist Netball Program is coordinated by Diane Papas and Haylee McKee, Specialist Netball Teachers, Roxanne Edwards, visiting Professional Coach and Sarah Cosh, Support Staff. Diane is a Division 1 Senior Association Netball Coach with Intermediate Coaching Accreditation and has represented WA in past national netball tournaments. Hayley is an Intermediate Level Coach and is currently the apprentice coach of the West Coast Warriors Open WANL team. She has previously represented West Coast Warriors and Perth Lions in WANL competitions and represented WA in past national netball tournaments. Roxanne has Elite Coach status Australia wide. She was a West Coast Fever Specialist Defence Coach in 2009, is an Ex Orioles and coaches throughout the State and overseas. SPECIALIST NETBALL PROGRAM PATRON The John Forrest Secondary College prestigious Specialist Programs are supported by Patrons and the Specialist Netball Program is proud to have Jessica Anstiss as their Patron. One of Australia’s leading young midcourt players, Jessica played state league for the Rangers and was named Player of the Year in 2015. Renowned for her consistent form Jessica represented Western Australia in the 17U, 19U and 21U sides and Australia in the 17U, 19U and 21U teams. Since 2014 Jessica formed an integral part of the Western Sting in the Australian Netball League and was named Most Valuable Player, before joining West Coast Fever as a replacement player in 2016. Jessica was selected in the 2018 Australian team for the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana, won the Rebel Young Star Award and named in the 2018 Team of the Year.
