PREFACE The Publication of District Statistical Hand Book-2015 Presents a dossier of different variants of Thoothukudi profile. At the outset I thank the departments of State, Central Government and public sector under taking for their Co-operation in furnishing relevant data on time which have facilitate the preparation of hand book. The Statistical Tables highlight the trends in the Development of Various sectors of the Thoothukudi District. Date : Thoothukudi District Block Maps Thoothukudi District Taluk Maps SALIENT FEATURES OF THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT Thoothukudi District carved out of the erstwhile Thirunelveli District on October 20, 1986. Thoothukudi was a major natural pearl fishing centre till last century. It is one of the oldest ports in the world. The Light house built in 1842 marked the beginning of Thoothukudi harbour development. ‘India’ Independence struggle has strong links with Thoothukudi. Notable freedom fishers like Subramania Bharathi, Chitramparampillai, Vahchihathan and Veerapandia kattabomman hailed from Thoothukudi. Thoothukudi was establish municipality in 1866 and on august 5, 2008 attained a status of corporation after 142 years. Demography The area of the district is 4621 Sq.k.m. and the population is 1750176 (as per 2011 census) The district has three revenue divisions, eight taluks, twelve blocks, one corporation two municipalities, Nineteen town panchayats and 480 revenue village. Six constituencies and one Loksabha are in the district. The total population of this district as per 2011 census is around Seventeen lakhs. The density of population per Sq.km is 369. The sex ratio is 1023 females for every 1000 males. The percentage of literacy is 86.16. The district has a SC population of 347895 which is around 19.87 % of the total population. Sea Coast of Marine Resources Thoothukudi District has 16.5km of coast line, from vembar in the north to Tharuvai, near manapadu in the south. The Sea cost enabled deep sea fishing, marine products and salt industries to develop in the district. These are labour intensive industries. Significant Population dependent on these traditional industries. Rainfall The District is in the rain shadow region created by the Western Ghats of the west. The average annual rainfall in the district is 790.2 mm. The main rainy season for the district is from October to December. The district gets minimal rain fall during the south west monsoon. Agriculture: Agriculture is the main occupation on which 70% of the people depend on it .The main food crop in this district is paddy. Out of the total area of 470724 hectares, 197695 hectares are brought under the cultivation of different crops which is nearly 42 % of total area of the district. The important food crops in the district are paddy, Cholam, cumbu, ragi, and commercial crops like cotton, chilly, Pulses sugarcane and groundnut. Minerals Concentration of heavy minerals like limonite, quartet, zircon, monozite, sillimanite etc are found in the beach’s and also in coastal dunes adjacent to beach. Garnet and limonite dominate the medium signed grains. Thoothukudi Port Thoothukudi port that becomes a major port in India in 1974 is now on the average becoming an international container transshipment hup of south East Asia. The harbor is served buy a approach channel 2.4km is length and 183 meters in width. The draft of the approach channel is 12.5mt. Thoothukudi harbor base in as a maximum depth of 10.7m with a turning circle diameter of 488m. The total capacity of port is 20.55 million tones with 13 Perth’s. Thoothukudi Airport Thoothukudi is situated is vagaikulam 10km from Thoothukudi Town. As per the policy of Airport authority of India to revive small airports. The Thoothukudi Airport is being expanded and modernist the runway is being extended from 1350m to 1800m to enable operating the bigger aircraft. The State government is taking measures to acquire land for this expansion . Industry: The boom in the industrial sector has put the district prominently in the country’s industrial map. Heavy industries like Sterlite, SPIC, TAC, HWP DCW and Thermal Power Plant promise hope for a bright future. Hundreds of ancillary units have also sprung up. Textile units and match industries crowded in the kovilpatti belt. The fast growing V.O.C port in the changing economic scenario has added pep to the development of the district. Tourist Places Tiruchendur Murugan Temple, Kalugumali Sculptures of Jain Temple,Kattabomman Memorial Fort at Panchalankurichi, Bharathi Manimandapam at Ettayapuram, Manadpadu Church, Paniya Matha Church(Lady Snow), Navathirupathi Temples and Vanathirupathi Temple near Nazerath are important tourist places in Thoothukudi district.
