Moriah (1 Kings 6). 720 BC - Assyrians Conquer Northern Kingdom of Israel – 10 lost tribes of Israel. 586 BC - Destruction of Solomon's Temple - King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia destroys the Temple and Jerusalem. (Ark of the Covenant disappears before the destruction) 540 BC – Second Temple - Cyrus the Persian conquers Babylonia and allows the exiles to return to Jerusalem. Rebuilding of the (Second) Temple begins and is completed 15 years later. 332 BC - Hellenistic Period - Alexander the Great 175 BC - Antiochus Epiphanes, ruler of Syria, desecrates the Temple by sacrificing a pig on the altar and carrying off temple treasuries. Temple restored by the Macabees – Hanukkah. 63 BC - Rome conquers Judea, Pompey brazenly enters the Temple and the Holy of Holies. 42 BC – Herod's Temple – Herod the Great orders the Temple to be rebuilt and expanded considerably. He builds the Antonia Fortress on the Temple Mount 30-33 AD - Jesus in Jerusalem and at the Temple. 70 AD - Destruction of Jerusalem and Herod's Temple by Titus – the Arch of Titus in Rome 130 AD – Hadrian destroys Jerusalem again – renames it Aelia Capitolina after his family and the god Jupiter - Bar Kochba revolt put down – Jews banished from Jerusalem 312 AD – Emperor Constantine adopts Christianity as the religion of the Empire. 333 AD - His mother, Empress Helena visits Jerusalem and identifies Christian holy sites and orders the Temple Mount to be used as a garbage dump. 363 AD – Attempt to rebuild the Temple under Emperor Julian thwarted by earthquake and fire. .
