Address by the President of the Board

Address by the President of the Board Reviewing the last two years it has been a tough job for the Water Board due to the restrictive measures related to the water supply being enforced. Despite the restrictions the water supply was achieved by transporting water by tankers from Eleusina, and from early 2009 by the usage of the mobile desalination unit in the Pyrgos (Lemesos) region, and through boreholes in the Kouris delta and from the Garyllis boreholes water treatment unit,. Undoubtedly the intermittent water supply caused inconvenience to the consumers and generated the frequent water supply network breakdown incidents despite the efforts aiming to implement improved technology. The Water Board of Lemesos had a particularly significant role to play since it was solely responsible in providing almost 80.000 properties with water, which stands for approximately 170.000 citizens served. The Water Museum and the Water Awareness Raising Centre (in the yard of the Board Offices) have been “a pole of attraction” for the public, which is confirmed by the visit of thousands of people (mainly students) from all over Cyprus. Furthermore, a study is in progress for the restoration of the “Havouza” area. The Water Board has been established as the most secure source of water supply in the Lemesos urban area which explains the intense interest of surrounding communities in joining the area supplied zone provided with water by the Board which also does its best to ensure the enforcement of the European Directives on water issues. Consultation with the various Governmental Services to write off the Board’s debts towards the Water Development Department has been taking place, while the Board has introduced an annual increase in its rates and tariffs amounting to about 10%, following amendments of the relevant Law, aiming to be progressively financially able to cover its full costs. On the occasion of the Annual Report for 2008 and 2009 being published, I wish to express acknowledgements to all the Members of the Board of Directors for their valuable assistance provided; I also wish to thank our consumers for their cooperation and the associated Government Ministries such as the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources & Environment, as well as the Water Development Department, the State General Laboratory and the Health Services of the Ministry of Health. In conclusion, I wish to express acknowledgements to the Management and all the staff of the Board for their tireless efforts to cope with the problems faced by the Water Board so that it can head forward unobstructed into its future planning.
